Meta Cracks Down on Unoriginal Content on Facebook, Following YouTube’s Lead

Meta is stepping up its efforts to penalize Facebook accounts for posting unoriginal content, especially when it’s monetized, mirroring YouTube’s stricter policies.

This year alone, the company has already removed 10 million fake accounts impersonating well-known creators and restricted the reach of 500,000 pages for spam and engagement manipulation. Now, plagiarists are next in line for action.

Meta has clarified that original reactions, remixes, and trend-based content will remain untouched. The crackdown targets those who simply repost without adding cultural value or disguise themselves as other creators. These accounts will face temporary monetization bans and reduced reach.

To support authentic creators, Meta is testing a feature that adds links to the original source under duplicate videos, aiming to redirect audience attention where it belongs. For now, AI-generated content is off the hook, though Meta promises to keep it under close watch.

These updates will roll out gradually. The Professional Dashboard will soon include new metrics, allowing creators to check why their posts aren’t being recommended and whether their accounts risk losing monetization. This could be a pivotal moment for creators, pushing them to rethink their strategies. The focus may shift back to storytelling and engaging narratives, moving away from mindless clip compilations that cater to “brain rot.” As of 06:56 AM CEST on July 27, 2025, this move signals a new era of accountability on the platform.
