In a significant move for global medical AI research, two of Germany’s top scientists, Roland Eils and Irina Lehmann, have joined Fudan University in Shanghai.
The renowned couple, whose work has been pivotal in creating a human pancreatic cell atlas and leveraging AI to predict disease risks, brings a wealth of expertise to their new roles. Their departure marks a notable shift in the international research landscape as of July 15, 2025.
Roland Eils, a globally recognized mathematician and biologist, has led major national research initiatives in Germany, earning acclaim for his innovative approaches to computational biology. Irina Lehmann, a leading epigenetics professor, has chaired numerous international scientific conferences and is celebrated for her contributions to understanding genetic influences on health. Together, the husband-and-wife team has published over 1,000 scientific papers and amassed more than 100,000 citations, cementing their status as pioneers in the field.
