Every once in a while, it’s a great idea to destress by deactivating your social media account. This gives you time to rejuvenate while stepping away from the buzzing digital world. When you’re ready to take a break, you generally have two options: delete your account permanently or deactivate it temporarily.

If you use Instagram on a mobile device, you’ll notice that the app itself doesn’t offer delete or deactivate options. You must perform these actions through a web browser. Instagram intentionally makes these options hard to find, as the platform prefers users to stay active.

What Happens After You Deactivate Your Instagram Account?

Deactivating (disabling) your account temporarily hides your profile, followers, likes, comments, and other activity from public view. Your data remains safe, and you can reactivate the account at any time simply by logging back in with your credentials.

What Happens When You Delete Your Instagram Account?

Deleting an account is permanent. Once deleted, your profile, username, photos, videos, comments, saved posts, likes, and follower data are all removed. There is no simple way to recover them.

After deletion, your username is no longer reserved for you and becomes available for anyone else to claim. If the username holds personal or brand value, consider deactivation instead.

Should you later decide to return to Instagram, you may be able to reclaim your old username only if it hasn’t already been taken by someone else.

Important Steps Before Deleting or Deactivating

Before taking either action, download a backup of your Instagram data. Instagram will eventually erase all account information from its servers, so having a personal copy is essential.

How to Regain Access to Your Instagram Account

If you have only deactivated your account, simply log in with your username and password to regain full access immediately.

After deletion, Instagram may retain certain user records for up to 30 days. During this window your username cannot be reassigned. After 30 days it becomes publicly available. The complete deletion process can take up to 90 days, during which your data remains securely stored before permanent removal.

All in all, deactivating your Instagram account is generally the safer and more flexible choice compared with permanent deletion.
