The ChatGPT mobile app has hit a remarkable milestone, generating $2 billion in global consumer spending since its debut in May 2023, according to data from Appfigures.
With an estimated 690 million downloads, the app averages $2.91 per user, signaling a strong willingness among audiences to pay for AI services on mobile devices — a trend that raises questions about the sustainability of this spending spree.
Revenue growth has surged dramatically this year. From January to July 2025, users spent $1.35 billion, a staggering 673% increase compared to the same period last year. That translates to roughly $193 million per month, a figure that dwarfs earlier performance.
The U.S. leads in revenue contribution at 38%, while India tops the charts for installs at 14%, hinting at diverse market dynamics driving the app’s success.

These metrics underscore ChatGPT’s commanding lead over competitors. By contrast, Grok has earned just $25.6 million this year, while the combined mobile revenue of Claude and Copilot pales in comparison, amounting to merely one-thirtieth of OpenAI’s haul. While impressive, this dominance might also reflect an overhyped market where early adopters fuel growth — leaving room to wonder if the bubble will hold or burst under scrutiny.
