How to Send iPhone Messages by Satellite—and Know What Will Not Send

To send an iPhone message by satellite, take an eligible iPhone outside when cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable, open Messages, follow the onscreen pointing guidance and send a short one-to-one iMessage or SMS. The feature carries text, emoji and Tapbacks, but it does not provide general internet access or support photos, videos, audio messages, stickers or group conversations.

Prepare before leaving coverage: install a supported iOS version, keep an active SIM, enable iMessage, check whether your carrier supports satellite SMS and practise with the Satellite Connection Demo. Ordinary Messages via satellite is available only in supported countries and should not be treated as a replacement for Emergency SOS via satellite.

Check the phone, software and country

Messages via satellite requires an iPhone 14 or later, an active SIM and the minimum iOS version for the country where you intend to use it. Hardware eligibility alone is insufficient: the ordinary messaging service must also be available in that country.

Apple’s current eligibility and availability page lists the United States, Canada and Japan with iOS 18 or later, and Mexico with iOS 18.4 or later. It does not list the United Kingdom or other markets as supported for ordinary Messages via satellite, even if another Apple satellite feature is available there.

  • United States: iPhone 14 or later, iOS 18 or later and an active SIM.
  • Canada: iPhone 14 or later, iOS 18 or later and an active SIM.
  • Japan: iPhone 14 or later, iOS 18 or later and an active SIM.
  • Mexico: iPhone 14 or later, iOS 18.4 or later and an active SIM.
  • United Kingdom and other unlisted countries: do not assume that Messages via satellite is available. Check Apple’s regional listing before departure.

Confirm the model and installed software under Settings, General, About. Install the latest compatible iOS update while you still have reliable internet access, power and enough time to resolve an unsuccessful update.

Complete the setup before departure

Pre-trip preparation for Messages via satellite with the connection demo, emergency contacts, offline details and backup power.

Several prerequisites are easier—or only possible—to configure while the iPhone remains online. Use this checklist before relying on the feature during a trip:

  1. Keep the SIM active. Do not remove or deactivate the physical SIM or eSIM used by the phone.
  2. Enable iMessage. Open Settings, Apps, Messages and turn on iMessage before leaving cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.
  3. Verify Send & Receive. Confirm that the expected phone number is selected, particularly after changing a carrier or eSIM.
  4. Check satellite SMS with the carrier. SMS availability depends on the network provider, and provider fees may apply. Confirm support for the line and plan rather than assuming that iMessage eligibility also guarantees SMS.
  5. Update likely recipients. An iPhone contact needs iOS 18 or later to receive iMessages in this workflow. An iPhone user replying by SMS needs iOS 17.6 or later; a non-Apple phone can use ordinary SMS when the sender’s provider supports the satellite route.
  6. Set emergency contacts and Family Sharing. Those contacts receive a special exception that lets them send you an SMS before you initiate a satellite conversation.
  7. Prepare offline information. Save maps, reservations, medical details and important telephone numbers locally instead of expecting a text-only satellite link to retrieve them.
  8. Carry reserve power. Charge the iPhone and, where appropriate, pack a charged power bank.

Tell a trusted contact where you are going, when you expect to return and what action they should take after a missed check-in. This remains useful if a satellite is temporarily unavailable or the terrain prevents a connection.

Practise with the Satellite Connection Demo

The demo lets you learn the directional interface without deliberately travelling beyond network coverage. Open Settings, Apps, Messages, scroll down and select Satellite Connection Demo; you can also open Control Center, select the Mobile Data control, tap Satellite and choose the demo while ordinary coverage is present.

Use the exercise outside on relatively open ground. Apple’s satellite connection instructions say to maintain a clear view of the sky and horizon, hold the phone naturally rather than raising it, and follow prompts to turn or move when the signal is obstructed. Light foliage can slow the connection, while dense foliage, hills, canyons and tall structures may block it.

The demo requires a country or region where the relevant satellite feature is available. If the expected option is absent, recheck the model, software, Location Services and regional eligibility before departure instead of assuming it will appear automatically off-grid.

Connect and send a message off-grid

The live messaging option appears when the iPhone detects that both cellular and Wi-Fi coverage are unavailable. Airplane Mode is not a reliable way to simulate that condition; use the demo for practice.

  1. Move outside to the most open safe location available, with a broad view of the sky and horizon.
  2. Unlock the iPhone and open Messages. The Lock Screen or Messages app may already display a prompt to use satellite messaging.
  3. If no prompt appears, open Control Center, select the Mobile Data control, tap Satellite and choose Messages via Satellite. When off-grid, Settings may also show Satellite as an entry point.
  4. Follow the directional guidance. On compatible Pro models, Dynamic Island can display connection indicators and arrows showing which way to turn.
  5. Open an existing one-to-one conversation or start one with a single recipient.
  6. Compose a concise text-only message, tap Send and keep the phone oriented as directed until transmission finishes.
  7. Maintain an adequate view of the sky if you are waiting for a reply.

The Tom’s Guide walkthrough illustrates the off-grid notification, satellite-services selection and phone-orientation stages that precede transmission. Its screenshots are useful for recognising the sequence, while Apple’s support page remains the controlling reference for current eligibility and restrictions.

Do not expect normal chat speed. In ideal conditions a message may take about 30 seconds to send, while light or medium foliage can extend the wait beyond a minute; heavy foliage or surrounding obstructions may prevent a connection. Message length and satellite-network availability can also affect the delay.

Match the message route to the recipient

How one-to-one iMessage, carrier-supported SMS and contact initiation rules affect satellite message recipients.

The recipient does not need a satellite connection. They usually receive the message through their existing internet or mobile service, but iMessage and SMS have different requirements.

  • Updated iPhone using iMessage: the recipient needs iOS 18 or later. Satellite iMessages remain end-to-end encrypted.
  • Older iPhone or non-Apple phone: the sender may use SMS if the sender’s network provider supports satellite SMS. RCS is not the satellite transport for this feature.
  • Emergency contact or Family Sharing member: this person can send an SMS before the off-grid user has sent them a message. It arrives after the off-grid iPhone connects and starts accepting messages.
  • Other SMS contact: the satellite-connected user must initiate the exchange first. Do not expect unsolicited SMS from every contact to appear after connecting.
  • On-grid iMessage contact: after sending a reply, the recipient may need to return to the conversation and tap Send via Satellite beneath the pending bubble.

If an iMessage cannot be sent because the recipient has older software, uses a non-Apple device or has not exchanged an iMessage with the sender recently, the iPhone may offer SMS instead. That fallback still depends on the sender’s provider, so it should be checked before the trip rather than discovered in the field.

Know exactly what will not send

Messages via satellite is designed for low-bandwidth, one-to-one communication. Plain text, emoji and Tapbacks are supported over iMessage or SMS when the relevant route is available.

The satellite connection cannot send or receive:

  • photos;
  • videos;
  • audio messages;
  • stickers;
  • messages in group conversations.

If essential information exists only in an attachment, rewrite it as text in a one-to-one thread. For example, replace a map screenshot with a trail name, junction, coordinates if known, direction of travel and the time the location was recorded.

A practical status message contains four elements: location, condition, intended action and next check-in time. Keeping it concise reduces ambiguity and avoids wasting a brief connection on information the recipient does not need.

Keep routine messaging separate from Emergency SOS

Messages via satellite is for routine contact with friends and family. If there is an immediate threat to life or safety and cellular calling and texting are unavailable, use Emergency SOS via satellite where the service is available and follow its structured prompts.

Connection Assistant may also display Emergency SOS, Roadside Assistance and Find My, depending on the country and service availability. These are separate workflows: a normal message to a family member does not create an emergency-services request or roadside-assistance case.

Satellite messaging should supplement a trip plan, not replace navigation tools, local emergency procedures, suitable equipment or a dedicated satellite communicator when the activity’s risk calls for one.

Use this fallback plan if a message fails

When a message remains pending or unsent, improve the route before repeatedly sending the same long text:

  1. Move to a more open safe position and restore the widest available view of the horizon.
  2. Follow the directional indicator and hold the phone naturally and steadily.
  3. Remove attachments, leave any group conversation and send a short text to one recipient.
  4. Try SMS only when the carrier supports satellite SMS and the recipient route qualifies.
  5. Wait for the send status to complete, then remain connected long enough to receive a reply.
  6. If the situation has become an emergency, stop troubleshooting it as an ordinary message and switch to Emergency SOS via satellite where available.

Before departure, agree on a compact format such as “SAFE — location — next destination — next check-in.” Define what a missed check-in means and when the on-grid contact should escalate, because terrain or satellite availability may prevent delivery even when the phone and setup are eligible.
