At the same time, T-Mobile is advancing a planned joint venture with AT&T and Verizon that would pool spectrum and make it easier for several satellite providers to connect ordinary mobile phones in areas where terrestrial networks are unavailable. The update was reported after T-Mobile’s second-quarter earnings call by Light Reading’s account of the carrier’s D2D strategy.

The immediate answer for readers asking what is happening with 5G is therefore straightforward: satellite connectivity is becoming a complementary layer around mobile networks, not a substitute for normal 5G service. T-Mobile still depends on Starlink for its existing T-Satellite offering, but its longer-term strategy is to support a more provider-neutral system. The carrier’s comments confirm that the commercial transition will take longer than some earlier expectations suggested; Data Center Dynamics reported that the exclusivity arrangement does not end in 2026.

Why the 5G story now involves satellites

The central change is that mobile operators are treating direct-to-device, sometimes called direct-to-cell, as an extension of the cellular network. A compatible phone can communicate with a satellite when it is outside the reach of a conventional cell site, particularly in remote terrain, national parks, offshore areas or during disruptions that damage ground infrastructure. The satellite link is intended to fill a coverage gap; it is not designed to replace the higher capacity and lower latency of a terrestrial 5G connection.

T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon announced the proposed joint venture on May 14, 2026. In its official announcement, T-Mobile said the companies had an agreement in principle to create a platform that would pool limited spectrum resources, improve interoperability and help satellite operators connect with more wireless customers. The official T-Mobile announcement describes the JV as a way to supplement coverage gaps and improve resilience, while also warning that definitive agreements still had to be negotiated.

What T-Mobile confirmed after its second-quarter call

Gopalan’s July comments narrow the timeline. The carrier is working toward a long-form agreement for the joint venture, but it remains tied to Starlink under the current exclusivity arrangement. That means the proposed structure is intended to broaden future choice without immediately replacing the service T-Mobile already operates with Starlink.

The distinction matters because the May announcement could be read as an imminent opening of T-Mobile’s satellite network to every major provider. That has not happened yet. As of July 26, 2026, the confirmed position is that the JV remains in formation, Starlink remains central to T-Mobile’s direct-to-device service, and the carrier does not expect the exclusivity relationship to end during 2026.

T-Mobile also gave a more restrained assessment of current demand. According to the earnings-call coverage from Data Center Dynamics, satellite traffic represented approximately 0.0002% of T-Mobile’s network usage and rose to 0.0003% during the busiest summer period. Those figures do not mean the technology is unimportant; they show that satellite connectivity is still a niche layer compared with everyday terrestrial mobile traffic.

The proposed carrier platform could change satellite competition

The joint venture’s significance is architectural as much as commercial. Instead of each mobile operator integrating separately with every satellite provider, the carriers want a shared framework that can combine terrestrial spectrum, network interfaces and common technical specifications. In principle, that could reduce duplicated integration work and give satellite companies a clearer path to reach customers on multiple networks.

The official proposal says the arrangement could expand customer choice and encourage more satellite capacity. It also frames satellite service as redundancy for emergencies: if a wildfire, hurricane or other disruption affects ground-based infrastructure, a space-based connection could preserve basic communication where a phone would otherwise show no service.

However, the announcement does not promise universal broadband coverage or identical service on every device. Performance will depend on the satellite constellation, spectrum authorization, handset compatibility, sky visibility, network congestion and the type of traffic supported. Messaging and emergency communication are easier to deliver than a full-speed 5G broadband experience, so readers should not interpret “coverage everywhere” as meaning the same speed everywhere.

Why Starlink remains important to T-Mobile

T-Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon prepare a shared satellite platform while Starlink remains T-Mobile’s current provider.

Starlink is still the practical foundation of T-Mobile’s current satellite product. The partnership gave T-Mobile an early route to direct-to-device service using satellites that can communicate with standard mobile phones through the operator’s spectrum arrangements. That early deployment also gave T-Mobile operational experience before the wider industry platform proposed with AT&T and Verizon is finalized.

Gopalan described satellite as a complementary category and said it will eventually become standard equipment in a carrier’s coverage portfolio rather than a unique differentiator. This is a strategic shift: the competitive question may move away from which operator is the only one offering satellite messaging and toward which operator provides the most reliable handoff between terrestrial 5G and satellite coverage.

The low usage share also explains why T-Mobile is not presenting satellite as a replacement for fixed wireless access or conventional broadband. Light Reading reported that T-Mobile continues to characterize its 5G fixed wireless product as substantially stronger for ordinary home connectivity, while satellite is aimed at places and moments where terrestrial service is absent or disrupted.

What remains unresolved

The biggest unanswered question is when the proposed joint venture will become a completed operating platform. T-Mobile’s May announcement was explicitly an agreement in principle, and the July update indicates that negotiations are progressing rather than finished. Until definitive agreements, regulatory steps and technical arrangements are completed, the final ownership structure, launch schedule and provider lineup remain uncertain.

Pricing and device support are also not settled by the announcement. A shared platform could make satellite access simpler, but it does not automatically determine whether customers will receive it inside existing plans, pay an additional fee or need a particular handset. Coverage maps may also differ between messaging, voice and data services.

For now, the confirmed direction is more measured than the most ambitious 5G headlines. T-Mobile is keeping its Starlink relationship beyond 2026, while preparing with AT&T and Verizon for a broader satellite ecosystem. The next meaningful milestones will be the signing of definitive JV agreements, clarification of participating satellite providers and evidence that the shared platform can deliver a consistent customer experience across phones and networks.
