Simulon Is Public—and Its iPhone VFX Pipeline Has a Free Tier

Simulon remains publicly available for iPhone, and the product has moved beyond its original paid-only launch structure by adding a free tier. As of August 13, 2026, the current US App Store listing identifies version 1.5.1, requires iOS 18.6 or later and records that version 1.2.0 introduced the free tier, new subscription options and local rendering.

This is an update to an October 2025 release, not a new launch in 2026. CGWORLD’s contemporary launch report dated the commercial release to October 16, 2025, while Apple’s version history shows 1.0.0 on October 11 and 1.0.1 on October 15; the different dates appear to mark stages of the same App Store rollout rather than separate products.

What public access means now

The important change for a curious creator is that Simulon no longer sits behind an invitation-only beta. It can be downloaded directly from the App Store, and its free tier provides a lower-friction way to examine the production model before choosing among the in-app subscriptions and render-credit purchases listed by Apple.

“Free,” however, should not be read as a promise that every production can be completed without payment. The listing explicitly includes in-app purchases, while cloud rendering, higher-end output and heavier asset use may depend on the selected plan or purchased credits. Prices can also vary by storefront and billing period, so the checkout screen is the appropriate place to confirm the cost for a particular region.

Compatibility is another concrete boundary. The public listing is for iPhone—not Android, iPad or a general-purpose web editor—and currently requires iOS 18.6 or newer. That operating-system requirement establishes the minimum software condition, but it does not guarantee identical scanning, capture or performance results across every supported iPhone model.

The phone handles more than a simple 3D overlay

Simulon’s current proposition is an end-to-end VFX workflow built around shooting with an iPhone. A creator can preview a 3D asset in the viewfinder during capture, reconstruct the surrounding space as a scale-aware mesh, generate a 360-degree HDR lighting environment and use captured camera information to align digital content with live-action footage.

Those functions address several separate jobs that conventional compositing often distributes across tracking, lighting, scene reconstruction and rendering tools. Seeing the asset during photography can help a camera operator frame around its intended position, while the reconstructed environment supplies geometry for effects such as occlusion, shadows and set extensions. The result is still a VFX pipeline: the app reduces setup work, but it does not eliminate the need for suitable 3D assets, deliberate blocking or scrutiny of the final composite.

Rendering is no longer described as exclusively cloud-based. Local rendering appeared in the version history alongside the free tier, while the product continues to advertise on-demand distributed rendering for more demanding output, including resolutions up to 4K and multilayer EXR files. For creators, that creates a practical choice between keeping an iteration close to the phone and using remote compute or richer deliverables when a project requires them.

Desktop integration remains part of the serious workflow

The phrase “VFX on iPhone” does not mean every advanced task happens only on the handset. The official Simulon Hub documentation describes a macOS and Windows desktop application for uploading custom assets, downloading take artifacts, rendering takes and viewing or editing scenes from Blender; it currently specifies Blender 4.4.3 or newer for the integration.

Simulon Hub also exposes useful production material without requiring the Blender plug-ins. The documented downloads include clean plates, audio and raw camera frames, while asset uploads accept USDZ and GLB files. That distinction matters to editors and VFX artists: the phone can remain the capture and scene-placement device while conventional desktop software handles asset preparation, detailed scene changes or downstream compositing.

The current official materials therefore support a hybrid workflow more clearly than the idea of an entirely self-contained mobile studio. A solo creator can begin on the phone and render locally, but a Blender artist or post-production team can take the same project into a familiar desktop environment. This is less magical than replacing a workstation outright, yet it is more useful for productions that need access to source plates and editable scene data.

Collaboration claims need a narrower reading

Earlier descriptions of Simulon emphasized “working groups,” role assignment, comments, version history and real-time co-editing. Those specific collaboration controls are not documented in the current App Store description or the available Simulon Hub guide, so they should not be treated as verified features of the present public product.

What can be confirmed is workflow interoperability: projects and artifacts can move between the iPhone, Simulon Hub and Blender, and the desktop application is available on both major computer platforms. That can support collaboration operationally—for example, one person capturing a take and another preparing or refining its assets—but file movement and Blender access are not the same as simultaneous multi-user editing inside a shared workspace.

The same caution applies to named “take-based” and “scene-based” modes previously associated with the product. Current public documentation discusses takes, scenes and related artifacts, but it does not establish those labels as two switchable creation modes. Creators planning a team pipeline should verify account permissions, sharing behavior and version control inside the app before assuming that it replaces a dedicated review or production-management system.

Where Simulon fits for creators

Simulon now offers a credible entry point for creators who already have, or can obtain, 3D assets and want to place them into footage without assembling the initial tracking and lighting setup manually. The free tier makes that workflow easier to evaluate, while local rendering reduces dependence on cloud processing for at least some iterations.

Its clearest limitation is also its defining choice: capture begins on an iPhone running a recent version of iOS. More elaborate asset preparation, scene editing and post-production can still lead back to Blender, Simulon Hub or another desktop application. Simulon is therefore best understood as a mobile-first bridge between physical photography and a conventional 3D pipeline—not as proof that every stage of professional VFX has collapsed into a single phone screen.
