MANGO: The New FAANG Redefining Tech’s Power Center

For years, tech enthusiasts and investors have rallied around acronyms like FAANG - coined around 2017 to represent Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix, and Google.

Before that, FANG (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Google) dominated the narrative.

Other variants emerged over time: GLAM (Google, LinkedIn, Apple, Microsoft, sometimes Meta) highlighted prestigious workplaces in HR/Tech; GAFA (Google, Amazon, Facebook, Apple) and GAFAM (adding Microsoft) gained traction in financial circles.

More inclusive terms like FAAMG and FANGAM kept the same core players, while the “heavyweight” FAATMAN (Facebook, Alphabet, Amazon, Tesla, Microsoft, Apple, Netflix) entered the lexicon around mid-2020. In 2022, MAMAA (Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet) was pushed as a FAANG successor. The Magnificent 7 (Mag7: Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia, Alphabet, Meta, Tesla) and China’s Dragon 7 (Tencent, PDD Holdings, Alibaba, Meituan, BYD, Xiaomi, NetEase) or Terrific 10 (adding JD, Baidu, Geely, SMIC) followed, alongside the classic BAT (Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent).

Now, a new acronym is taking center stage: MANGO (Microsoft, Anthropic, Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI). Variants swapping Meta or Apple for Microsoft or Anthropic are also gaining ground. MANGO isn’t just a catchy label - it’s a mirror reflecting a pivotal shift in tech history.

Where FAANG and the Magnificent 7 once symbolized divided domains - social media, e-commerce, streaming, and search - MANGO heralds an era where artificial intelligence reigns as the singular force driving innovation.


The Rise of AI Leaders

MANGO encapsulates the companies shaping this AI-centric world. Microsoft, with its deep AI investments, partners with OpenAI, the pioneer behind ChatGPT. Nvidia powers the hardware revolution with its GPUs, essential for AI training. Google DeepMind pushes the boundaries of machine learning, while Anthropic, founded by ex-OpenAI researchers, focuses on safe AI development.

These players don’t just release products; they set societal trends and seal transformative deals, dictating tech’s trajectory. Their influence dwarfs the fragmented dominance of FAANG, uniting the industry under AI’s umbrella.

A New Prestige Peak

For computer science graduates, MANGO has become the new pinnacle of aspiration, replacing FAANG’s allure. However, the path is steeper. Since 2019, hiring of young talent by top firms has dropped by over 50%, reflecting a shift to a closed battlefield for elite AI researchers.

Competition is fierce, with companies vying for a select few minds capable of advancing this cutting-edge field. Landing a role at MANGO is now a badge of honor, but the exclusivity underscores the industry’s evolution.
