The fifth annual Top 100 AI Apps list from Andreessen Horowitz reveals that the AI ecosystem is beginning to stabilize.
The web ranking added just 11 new names, a sharp decline from March’s report, while the mobile segment saw 14 newcomers, largely due to App Store crackdowns on ChatGPT clones, paving the way for original apps.
Google’s Rising Dominance
A standout development is Google’s strengthened position. Its flagship assistant, Gemini, secured second place behind ChatGPT on both web and mobile. However, the gap remains wide: Gemini captures about 12% of ChatGPT’s web traffic. On mobile, it’s closer, with nearly half of ChatGPT’s monthly active users (MAU).
Notably, 90% of Gemini’s mobile users are on Android, compared to 60% for ChatGPT. Beyond Gemini, Google AI Studio broke into the top 10, NotebookLM ranked 13th, and Google Labs hit 39th, boosted by a 13% traffic surge in May 2025 after launching the Veo 3 video model.
ChatGPT Still Leads, But Rivals Gain Ground
ChatGPT retains its top spot, though competition intensifies. xAI’s Grok climbed to fourth on web and 23rd on mobile, with an impressive rise from zero MAU late 2024 to over 20 million now.
Its July 2025 Grok 4 release drove a nearly 40% usage spike. Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta AI lags, holding 46th on web with no mobile presence.
Perplexity continues steady growth, while Claude and DeepSeek show mixed results — DeepSeek notably dropped over 40% of its web traffic since its February 2025 peak.
China’s AI Surge
China stands out, with three domestic-focused companies in the web top 20: Alibaba’s Quark (9th), ByteDance’s Doubao (12th), and Moonshot AI’s Kimi (17th), drawing over 75% of their traffic from China, where ChatGPT and Claude face restrictions.
On mobile, the trend is even more striking — 22 of the top 50 apps were developed in China, though most are used globally. Photo and video editing dominate, with Meitu boasting five entries (e.g., BeautyPlus, Wink) and ByteDance excelling with Doubao and Cici.
