Which is The Best Networks Between Public & Private Networks?

Hello!

Key Differences Between Public and Private Networks
As the name suggests, a public network is open to anyone. Classic examples include free Wi-Fi in cafés, airports or libraries, as well as the internet itself.

Additional Technical and Security Distinctions
- Public networks require extra caution with device addressing and visibility.
- Private networks offer greater flexibility in IP addressing and device management.
- Neither network type is tied to a single topology; the main differences lie in how security and access rules are configured.
Common Uses of Private Networks

Office Networks
In corporate environments, private networks keep company devices and data away from unauthorised users while still allowing controlled internet access. Businesses rely on them to run internal applications, back-end services and to protect confidential information such as financial records.
Home and Critical Infrastructure Networks
At home, private Wi-Fi networks let family members share files, printers and other devices securely. Larger private networks also support critical infrastructure where nationally sensitive data must remain protected.

Customising Discovery and Firewall Settings
Switching from public to private involves adjusting network discovery and firewall rules. Below are the steps for Windows 10.
Discovery Settings

- Click the Start Menu and type “Control Panel”.
- Open Network & Internet → View network status and tasks.
- Select “Change advanced sharing settings”.
Here you can enable or disable Network Discovery, Homegroup connections and File sharing according to your needs.
Firewall Settings

- Open Control Panel → System and Security → Windows Firewall.
- Choose “Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall” to fine-tune rules for specific applications.
Changing the Network Profile

- Open Settings → Network & Internet.
- Under Wi-Fi or Ethernet, click the connected network.
- Select “Private” as the network profile.
Once the profile is private, you can create a Homegroup or adjust sharing options in Advanced sharing settings.
