Four AI Photo Restorers, Four Different Jobs—and None Does Everything

Picsart, MyHeritage Reimagine, AI Ease and Hotpot are all practical AI options for old photographs, but they are not interchangeable. The right choice depends on whether the original has physical damage, blurry faces, faded color, low resolution or an entire album waiting to be scanned.

The important change is that restoration is no longer treated as one automatic effect. Current tools separate repair, sharpening, colorization, enlargement and digitization—and a convincing result can still contain details or colors inferred by software rather than recovered from the print.

The four tools at a glance

Picsart is the broadest starting point for someone who wants automatic cleanup and ordinary editing in one place. MyHeritage Reimagine is the more useful choice for scanning albums and organizing family photographs. AI Ease offers a simple browser workflow for damage repair and optional colorization, while Hotpot divides restoration, face enhancement, colorization and upscaling into separate tools.

This distinction matters because “restore” can describe several technically different operations. A 2025 image-restoration study compared free web services across denoising, deblurring, super-resolution and white-balance correction and found markedly different feature combinations; none of the tested public services supplied every operation in one free workflow.

1. Picsart: the best general-purpose starting point

Picsart is the most balanced option here when a scan has several moderate problems: faded tones, small scratches, softness and insufficient resolution. It combines an automatic restoration step with a larger editor, so the result can be cropped, adjusted or cleaned further without moving to another service.

The current Picsart restoration tool describes automatic sharpening, discoloration correction, scratch and crease repair, low-resolution enhancement and batch processing. Its page also presents restoration as free to try, but output entitlements and advanced editing access should still be checked at the point of export because account and plan conditions can change.

Choose Picsart for a lightly or moderately damaged print when convenience matters more than precise control. It is less suitable when the photograph has a missing face, a large torn area or historically important details that must not be reconstructed speculatively.

2. MyHeritage Reimagine: best for an album, not just one file

Reimagine solves a problem the other choices largely leave outside the restoration step: turning physical album pages into separate digital photographs. Its scanner detects individual pictures on a photographed page and crops them, reducing the repetitive work involved in digitizing a family collection.

The official MyHeritage Reimagine page currently lists album-page scanning, resolution enhancement, black-and-white colorization, scratch and crease repair, and short facial animations. Restoration and animation should be treated as different outputs: animation creates a new interpretation of the subject rather than a more faithful archival copy.

Reimagine is therefore the strongest choice when the project begins with prints still inside an album or when the restored files will become part of a family-history collection. If only one already-scanned image needs straightforward cleanup, its scanning and genealogy-oriented workflow may be unnecessary.

3. AI Ease: best for a simple restore-or-colorize decision

AI Ease keeps the beginner workflow direct: upload an image, choose enhancement or colorization, process it and download the result. Its current restoration interface advertises repair for scratches, tears and spots, clarity improvement and colorization of black-and-white photographs, with daily free credits tied to sign-in.

This is a sensible first attempt for a portrait with visible surface defects or for someone who wants to compare a monochrome version with an automatically colorized alternative. Preserve the uncolorized restoration as well: software predicts plausible colors from learned patterns, but it cannot establish the original color of a dress, wall or vehicle when the source contains no such information.

AI Ease is not the first choice for a large archive because its credit model and one-image workflow can add friction. It is better suited to a small number of photographs where the user wants a guided result without learning a full editor.

4. Hotpot: best when one narrow operation is enough

Hotpot separates its AI Picture Restorer from its Photo Upscaler, Face Enhancer and Picture Colorizer. That modular approach is helpful when the image needs one identifiable correction—for example, scratch removal without automatic colorization, or enlargement after the surface damage has already been repaired.

The service currently presents its basic restorer as usable without an account and says it works with color and black-and-white pictures. Free outputs carry noncommercial-use conditions, while commercial processing and higher-volume access use credits or paid arrangements; those licensing limits make Hotpot less straightforward for a business archive or a photograph intended for sale.

Use Hotpot when you can name the immediate problem and select the corresponding module. Repeatedly passing the same file through restoration, face enhancement and upscaling can compound invented texture, so compare every stage with the original rather than assuming more processing means greater accuracy.

A safer restoration workflow for beginners

The best result begins before AI processing. Keep the physical photograph, create a clean scan and work on a duplicate file. A phone capture can be adequate for sharing, but glare, perspective distortion and shadows may be interpreted as defects and then “corrected” into details that were never present.

  1. Scan or photograph the print as evenly as possible and save an untouched master.
  2. Identify the dominant problem: physical damage, blur, fading, low resolution or missing color.
  3. Run one appropriate restoration operation and compare faces, hands, jewelry, signs and background edges with the master.
  4. Apply colorization or animation only as a separate derivative, never as a replacement for the archival scan.
  5. Export the restored version under a new filename and record which tool and operations were used.

For a lightly scratched scan, start with Picsart. Choose Reimagine when digitizing album pages, AI Ease for an uncomplicated repair-and-colorize workflow, and Hotpot when a separate restorer or upscaler better matches the defect. For torn-away facial features, important documentary evidence or a unique photograph with no backup, manual restoration by an experienced editor remains the safer choice.
