U.S. E-commerce Grew 9.8%: 10 Skills a Durable Store Needs

The U.S. Census Bureau’s quarterly release shows that retail e-commerce sales grew 9.8% year over year in the first quarter of 2026, versus 3.9% for total retail sales; the seasonally adjusted estimate was $326.7 billion, or 16.9% of retail sales.
The market is still expanding, but a durable store requires more than proficiency with isolated advertising, design, or spreadsheet tools. The essential skills now form a connected operating system spanning customer demand, merchandising, acquisition, measurement, inventory, and cash.
The 10 skills an e-commerce operator needs
- Customer research and positioning. Learn to identify a specific buyer, the problem that prompts a purchase, the alternatives already available, and the reasons the decision may feel risky. Useful evidence can come from customer interviews, support conversations, reviews, on-site searches, and recurring pre-purchase questions. The output is a precise offer for a defined customer, not a detailed persona whose characteristics never change a business decision.
- Offer design and unit economics. A product is not necessarily a viable commercial offer. Operators need to understand selling price, landed product cost, payment fees, fulfilment expense, expected returns, discounts, and acquisition cost. They should also be able to assess how bundles, subscriptions, free-shipping thresholds, and guarantees affect both customer value and contribution margin. Revenue growth can conceal deteriorating cash flow or order economics, which makes this an early-stage skill rather than an accounting task for later.
- Conversion copy and merchandising. Product-page copy should resolve the questions blocking a purchase: what the item does, whom it suits, what is included, how it differs, when it will arrive, and what happens if it is unsuitable. Merchandising extends that work through coherent categories, variants, comparisons, bundles, and cross-sells. The objective is to reduce uncertainty while keeping price, delivery, subscription, and return conditions visible.
- Product imagery and content production. An operator should know how to plan an image set around buying questions instead of treating photography as decoration. Depending on the merchandise, shoppers may need to see scale, texture, packaging, fit, component details, several angles, or the product in use. The broader capability includes writing production briefs, managing usage rights, maintaining consistent assets across channels, and deciding when a straightforward demonstration is more useful than an elaborate campaign image.
- Storefront experience and conversion diagnosis. Examine the full route from landing page to order confirmation on both narrow and wide screens. Navigation, on-site search, variant selection, delivery information, payment choices, form errors, page performance, and accessible controls can determine whether an interested shopper completes the order. Effective diagnosis starts by locating the stage where progress breaks down, then investigating the cause before redesigning the entire store.

Define which decisions the data must support, use consistent product and transaction identifiers, test the purchase path, and reconcile recorded transactions with the commerce platform. A spreadsheet may be sufficient at modest scale, but definitions, ownership, and review intervals must stay consistent.
Learn the skills in the order that removes risk
A new business should begin with customer research, positioning, offer design, and basic economics. Together, these capabilities test whether there is a credible reason to buy and whether an order can contribute enough to support fulfilment and acquisition. Polished advertising cannot repair an offer that answers no clear demand or consistently loses money.
The next layer is the minimum complete buying system: decision-ready copy, informative imagery, navigable product and category pages, dependable checkout, and accurate order handling. Search architecture is easier to establish while the catalogue is manageable than to repair after inaccessible pages, inconsistent categories, and duplicated routes have accumulated.
Measurement should precede aggressive spending on traffic. Product views, carts, checkouts, completed purchases, refunds, channel costs, and commerce-platform orders need definitions that can be compared coherently. Only then can modest experiments isolate a constrained stage such as discovery, product-page comprehension, checkout completion, or repeat purchasing.
What mastery looks like
Mastery does not mean personally producing every photograph, configuring every analytics event, and managing every campaign indefinitely. It means being able to define the required outcome, inspect the work, recognize a misleading metric, and understand how a decision in one function affects the rest of the business.
The practical test is whether the operator can trace a sale from demand to cash: why the customer arrived, what resolved the purchase decision, what the order cost to acquire and fulfil, whether it was measured correctly, and whether the experience supports another purchase. That connected view is what turns a collection of specialist abilities into an e-commerce operating capability.
