Someone Tricked ChatGPT Into Singing "WAP"... and May We Just Say "Yikes"

Hello!
ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode Sparks Viral Moments
ChatGPT's new advanced voice mode has users buzzing—including one who cleverly prompted it to perform Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion's explicit 2020 hit "WAP."

Posted by X user "Pliny the Liberator," the video shows ChatGPT attempting the sexually charged track despite its usual guardrails. The clip quickly went viral as the chatbot was coaxed into behaviors it is typically programmed to avoid.
Voice Options and the Viral Prompt
As OpenAI announced during its global rollout of advanced voice mode for ChatGPT subscribers in 2026, the feature offers five distinct voices with male and female inflections across American, Australian, and British accents.
The user behind the recording claims they engineered a "race-swap" prompt that shifted the voice to sound African American. The resulting audio features an awkward, exaggerated accent that many viewers found uncomfortable. We have reached out to the poster for clarification on the exact prompting technique.

"ChatGPT had to race-swap, impersonate a public figure, sing, swear, moan, generate sound effects, and print copyrighted lyrics to produce this output," Pliny noted—though the post incorrectly attributes the song to Nicki Minaj.

Another Musical Breakthrough: The Beatles Duet

While the "WAP" incident raised serious concerns, another user achieved a lighter musical feat shortly after advanced voice mode launched. As Ars Technica reported, S&P Global AI architect AJ Smith coaxed ChatGPT into singing a duet of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby."
Although singing contradicts the model's system prompt (a version of which was previously leaked by Pliny), Smith revealed the disarmingly simple workaround.

"I just said we'd play a game," the engineer told Ars. "I'd play the four pop chords and it would shout out songs for me to sing along with those chords. Which did work pretty well!"
After several exchanges of spoken lyrics, ChatGPT transitioned into actual singing. "Already it was such a unique experience," Smith said, "but that really took it to the next level."
