Olivia Munn has shared insights into her unexpected pregnancy with her husband, John Mulaney, revealing that she "barely knew" him when she got pregnant with their first child.

Their initial encounter was at the wedding of Seth Meyers and Alexi Ashe back in 2013, but they didn't reconnect until 2021.

At that time, Mulaney, then 42 and a former "Saturday Night Live" star, was in the process of finding a new home in New York City following his separation from his ex-wife, Anna Marie Tendler.

Munn helped by introducing him to a friend, which sparked more frequent communication and eventually a deeper relationship between the two.

Munn and Mulaney were seeing each other casually in 2021

“It wasn’t anything close to ‘dating,’” Munn explained. “I barely knew him.”

However, in a GQ interview, Munn revealed that Mulaney was ecstatic upon learning she was pregnant. Initially, she anticipated they would co-parent, with her based in Los Angeles and Mulaney remaining in New York. Despite this, they maintained contact, with Mulaney making occasional visits during her pregnancy.

This period coincided with Mulaney's recent completion of rehab, following a relapse during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, which had broken his 15-year sobriety from addiction and alcoholism.

As Munn's pregnancy advanced, the pair seemed to bond more deeply. She noted that the impending arrival of their child was "the only thing that made him feel light and happy".

“I remember he was really excited to tell his parents. I was watching someone newly sober, at the edge of a cliff, and I didn’t know him well enough to help him,” Munn recalled.

"In my head, I’m thinking, ‘I don’t know really what’s happening with this guy. It feels pretty shaky,’” she added, observing that he was a completely different person on stage.

Munn and Mulaney later married in 2024

"But then I would see him at the Troubadour and think, 'Man, he's on fire. He's just that phenomenal.'"

This isn't the first time Munn has spoken openly about her unexpected pregnancy with Mulaney; she also touched on the subject when she was a guest on the She MD podcast with OB-GYN Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi.

Dr. Aliabadi delivered Munn's son, Malcolm, in 2021, and later diagnosed her with breast cancer in 2023.

During their conversation, Munn talked about becoming a mom at 41.

"It was a surprise pregnancy. I didn't have any medical team ready. I had no idea," the 'Newsroom' actress told Aliabadi.

Munn went on to laud Aliabadi for being an 'amazing' doctor.

"It was the most amazing birth. The labor and delivery were like a dream," Munn shared, noting that Aliabadi showed her a lot of compassion during a challenging period in her life.

"It was, surprisingly [an easy pregnancy], but in different ways it was difficult," Munn admitted.

"Honestly, [Aliabadi] held my hand through the whole thing. ... She really guided me along the way, not just with what was going on physically, but emotionally as well.”

Earlier this year, Mulaney and Munn got married in an intimate ceremony and later welcomed their second child, named Méi June Mulaney.
