Shopify Retired the Old Pixel Box—Use This Meta Pixel Setup Instead

To add a Meta Pixel to Shopify, open the Facebook & Instagram sales channel and connect the pixel from its data-sharing settings. The older method—pasting a Facebook Pixel ID into Online Store preferences—is no longer the supported route.

The change matters to both new and established stores. According to Shopify’s pixel-migration notice, Meta pixels that had not been configured through the relevant app were removed from Preferences in February 2025 and converted to custom pixels in an attempt to preserve measurement; Shopify directs merchants to migrate Meta tracking to the Facebook & Instagram channel.

What you need before connecting the pixel

You need access to the Shopify admin and a Facebook account that can reach the intended Meta business assets. Identify the correct business portfolio, Facebook Page, advertising account and pixel before starting, particularly when one organization manages multiple brands or stores.

If Facebook & Instagram already appears under Sales channels, use that installation. Reinstalling the channel is unnecessary when you only need to connect or replace a pixel, and it can force you to authorize the Meta assets again.

A missing pixel in Shopify usually indicates that the signed-in Facebook account cannot access it or that it belongs to another business portfolio. Resolve the asset ownership or permission issue before creating a replacement; otherwise, reporting can become split across multiple data sources.

Connect Meta Pixel through Facebook & Instagram

The current controls are inside the sales channel rather than the theme editor. Shopify’s Facebook data-sharing instructions specify the navigation path, the Standard, Enhanced and Maximum levels, and the commerce events handled by the integration.

  1. In Shopify admin, open Sales channels and select Facebook & Instagram.
  2. Select Settings, then open Data sharing settings.
  3. Activate customer data sharing if it is disabled.
  4. Choose Standard, Enhanced or Maximum after reviewing what the setting sends.
  5. Select Connect beside the existing Meta Pixel you intend to use. If the channel offers pixel creation and you do not have one, create it through the guided setup.
  6. Complete the connection and check that Shopify displays the intended pixel.

The maintained integration automatically handles PageView, ViewContent, Search, AddToCart, InitiateCheckout, AddPaymentInfo and Purchase. A standard installation therefore does not require Meta’s base code to be pasted into theme.liquid.

Choose the data-sharing level deliberately

Standard uses the browser-based Meta Pixel to collect browsing behavior. Browser privacy controls and ad blockers can prevent some requests from reaching Meta, so its event total may differ from Shopify sessions or orders.

Enhanced combines the pixel with Conversions API for the purchase event. Maximum also uses the pixel and Conversions API and incorporates the latest Meta advertising technology available through Shopify’s integration.

Enhanced and Maximum can share a customer’s name, location, email address and phone number, as well as browsing behavior, to support matching on Meta’s network. The choice is consequently a data-governance decision, not simply a switch for collecting more events.

Review the store’s privacy notice, consent mechanism and applicable obligations before changing the level. Shopify’s web-pixel documentation explains that app pixel extensions honor Shopify customer-consent signals and, where prior consent is required, their callbacks run only after consent is given.

Verify the shopping journey, not only the connection

Seeing the intended pixel selected in Shopify shows that it has been configured, but it does not establish that every required event is reaching Meta. Generate fresh activity by opening the storefront in a separate browser session, viewing a product, adding it to the cart and beginning checkout.

Open the corresponding data source in Meta Events Manager and check that ViewContent, AddToCart and InitiateCheckout appear under the same pixel selected in Shopify. If the store has a safe test-order procedure, complete it to inspect the Purchase event as well.

For a purchase, check whether the event appears once and whether its value and currency are plausible. Shopify defines the tracked order value as the checkout total, including duties, taxes and discounts, so it need not match the merchandise subtotal.

Fresh activity may not appear immediately. Consent choices, browser blocking and the absence of a newly completed action can all leave a connected pixel without visible events; these conditions should be checked before changing the installation.

Remove duplicate legacy tracking

After the sales-channel connection is operating, inspect older tracking locations. A store may still contain Meta code in theme files, a tag manager, checkout customizations or the Customer events area.

Search theme code for the relevant pixel identifier and for fbq, the function commonly used by Meta’s browser code. Do not delete a match until you know which events it sends, especially if the store has custom actions that the standard channel integration does not cover.

If both the sales channel and legacy code submit the same action, reporting can show duplicate events and unreliable conversion totals. Shopify’s maintained Meta integration should be the sole standard implementation unless there is a documented custom requirement.

Migration involves a short trade-off. Connecting the replacement before removing old code reduces the chance of a measurement gap but permits temporary overlap; removing old code first avoids overlap but can create an unmeasured interval. Schedule the change when lower traffic makes either risk easier to inspect.

When the pixel or events are missing

If the desired pixel is absent from the selector, verify the Facebook account used for authorization and the business portfolio that owns the data source. Also check that the Shopify channel is connected to the intended business rather than a similarly named account.

If the correct pixel is selected but individual events are absent, separate consent and browser issues from implementation faults. Repeat the same storefront action in a clean session, then compare the same event, pixel and time period inside Meta instead of comparing unlike totals from separate analytics systems.

Use a custom pixel only when the maintained integration cannot represent a genuine measurement requirement. A custom implementation transfers responsibility for JavaScript, event mapping, consent behavior and ongoing maintenance to the store operator; for standard Meta advertising measurement, the Facebook & Instagram channel remains the direct setup path.
