In an economy that needed legions of capable knowledge workers, this made sense. Schools and universities functioned, in large part, as training grounds for people who could reliably do the work.

In a world saturated with generated answers and automated options, the ability to examine claims, assess provenance, evaluate trade-offs, and decide what is worth doing becomes indispensable. A person who can do these things is equipped not only for meaningful work — entrepreneurship, contribution within organizations—but for participation in self-government.

In practical terms, this means treating AI not as a replacement for intellectual effort but as a partner that can extend thought when used well — and as a temptation to avoid productive friction when used poorly. Students should learn to recognize when struggle is the work that builds durable understanding, and when the tool is merely creating the feeling of progress without the substance.

They should practice interrogating materials, testing assumptions, and using AI to surface gaps rather than to paper over them. Courses that begin with real problems and require students to define purposes, gather evidence, prototype responses, and account for consequences become more valuable than those that simply demand the efficient production of conventional deliverables.
