Did Mars Previously Harbor Life? Will Life Be Sustainable There in the Future?

Hello!
There are many theories and ideas surrounding the question of life on Mars. We believe the planet once supported living organisms. The extensive data collected by robotic missions makes this a reasonable hypothesis. For example, in 2010 the Mars Spirit rover discovered soil exceptionally rich in silica, providing strong evidence that liquid water once flowed across the Martian surface.
Earth’s Changing Surface as a Model for Mars

To make the Red Planet habitable for humans, we must deliberately alter its environment through a process known as terraforming. The goal is to recreate Earth-like conditions step by step.
Key Stages of Terraforming
First, the atmosphere must be thickened with greenhouse gases. Next, accessible water sources must be identified and mobilised. Once liquid water is stable, plants can be introduced to generate oxygen. Successful plant growth would then allow the gradual addition of animals and microorganisms, ultimately building a self-sustaining ecosystem.

Major Challenges
- Low surface gravity
- Intense solar radiation and space weather
- Difficulty retaining a newly created atmosphere and liquid water
- Potential need for genetic adaptation in humans to cope with reduced gravity
Greenhouse gases and carbon-rich emissions could help shield the surface from solar radiation by thickening the atmosphere. However, whether this artificial atmosphere and any introduced water would remain stable over long periods is still uncertain.

Resources Required for Terraforming
- Ammonia, an effective greenhouse gas
- Hydrocarbons, abundant in Titan’s atmosphere
- Fluorine compounds
At present, all such proposals remain theoretical. Only small-scale experiments on Earth or in orbit can validate these ideas, yet multiple studies suggest the underlying chemistry is sound.
An alternative, albeit controversial, concept involves detonating nuclear devices in the Martian atmosphere. The resulting release of gases could raise planetary temperatures, although the approach carries significant risks and uncertainties.
