AMD has confirmed plans to resume shipments of its MI308 accelerators to China, hot on the heels of Nvidia’s announcement just hours earlier about gaining approval to sell its H20 chips. The U.S. Department of Commerce has informed AMD that its export license applications will be reviewed with a strong likelihood of approval, marking a significant policy shift in Washington.

This reversal comes after stringent export restrictions on AI chips that inflicted substantial financial damage on American companies. AMD had estimated potential losses of $800 million due to the bans.

The decision to lift these restrictions follows sharp criticism from industry leaders, who argued that such measures were counterproductive, pushing China to develop its own technologies and undermining U.S. global leadership in AI. This move suggests a reevaluation of the effectiveness of previous export controls, though the long-term impact on the tech rivalry remains uncertain.
