Remote Days Cut Energy Swings by 33%—Not Energy Use Itself

On September 2, 2026, a University of Iowa research summary detailed findings from 219 hybrid employees: their energy varied about 33% less on home days than on office days, while their overall energy did not increase. The steadier pattern was associated with better progress toward daily work goals.
The peer-reviewed Organization Science record, published online August 6, 2026, identifies 4,812 hourly observations collected across five consecutive workdays. It also associates a one-point reduction in energy variability with 26% higher goal progress and 31% higher goal-progress velocity within the study’s models.
The result concerns stability, not an energy boost
Average energy and energy variability capture different features of a workday. Average energy describes a worker’s overall level, while variability measures the size of the rises and falls between hourly readings. Similar averages can therefore conceal very different daily rhythms.
That distinction is central to the finding. Home days were not better because employees acquired more energy or avoided the normal decline that can occur as work continues. Instead, smaller swings were linked to making more progress and reaching goals faster than expected that day.
The productivity measures concern employees’ perceptions of progress toward their own daily goals. They are not equivalent to a common output measure such as sales completed, cases resolved or software shipped, and they do not establish a guaranteed productivity gain from changing work location.
The proposed pathway begins with interruptions

The researchers’ explanation starts with workers’ control over disruptions. An in-person request, nearby conversation or unplanned transition in an office can interrupt the current task immediately; returning to that task then requires another shift of attention and effort.
Home environments also contain distractions, but workers may have more discretion over when to handle them. The Phys.org publication of the university account presents fewer distractions, greater scheduling control and the ability to defer messages or notifications as the explanation advanced for steadier energy away from the office.
The proposed pathway is therefore work location → greater control over interruptions → lower energy variability → stronger daily goal progress. The study directly measured location, hourly energy and perceived progress; its public interruption account supplies the explanation for why the observed patterns may differ. That makes the mechanism more specific than the claim that a home setting simply makes people productive.
The design compares workers with themselves

The study followed employees who already divided their time between home and onsite work. Rather than comparing a remote group with a separate office group, the researchers examined how the same people’s experiences changed across locations.
This within-person design reduces the likelihood that stable differences between employees—such as occupation, temperament or usual pace—fully explain the pattern. The analysis was also robust to controls that included children at home, choice of work location and industry.
However, the study was observational rather than a randomized experiment. Employees worked within an existing hybrid arrangement, so the results support a recurring within-worker association and a modeled explanatory pathway; they do not prove that assigning any employee a home day will produce the same effect.
The association was stronger among employees with higher remote-work intensity, meaning they worked from home more often. Familiarity with remote routines is a possible explanation, but the study does not establish that continually adding home days would keep improving performance.
One employer narrows the conclusion
Every participant worked for the same organization, which already allowed remote and hybrid work. Its roles, management practices and employee population may not resemble workplaces centered on physical equipment, in-person service or rapid face-to-face coordination.
The short observation window also leaves longer-term questions unanswered. The study does not determine whether the same pattern persists over months, nor whether home days improve team creativity, mentoring, knowledge transfer or organization-wide performance.
Some office interruptions can also create value for colleagues even when they disrupt one person’s immediate task. A quick exchange may solve a problem, share information or support a less experienced worker—effects that individual daily goal progress would not necessarily capture.
The evidence supports a hybrid implication, not a universal rule
The findings refine a debate often reduced to a home-versus-office productivity contest. In this sample, the relevant difference was the consistency of workers’ energy across the day, not a larger reserve of energy created by remote work.
That is why the researchers frame hybrid work as a potential compromise rather than a universal case for fully remote employment. The result is most applicable to work that can be performed in either location and whose daily goals benefit from sustained attention.
Replication across more employers, occupations and longer periods is still needed, ideally with independently measured output alongside workers’ own assessments. For now, the defensible conclusion remains narrow: among these hybrid employees, steadier energy was the measured pathway connecting home days with stronger daily goal progress.
