Gemini Daily Brief Reads Gmail and Chats—Check These Controls First

Gemini Daily Brief can read information from Gmail, Google Calendar, and earlier Gemini chats to build a personalized morning summary. Turning the brief off stops that summary, but it does not delete saved Gemini activity or erase the original email and calendar records.

Source access, Memory, and retained activity have separate controls. For sensitive information, stopping future retrieval may require disconnecting Google Workspace, while removing information already carried into Gemini requires deleting the relevant chats or activity as a separate action.

Check eligibility and dependencies before enabling it

Google’s Daily Brief help page says the feature is being released gradually to people aged 18 or older in the United States who use an eligible personal Google Account. Work, school, and supervised accounts are excluded; the feature currently requires English and is available through the Gemini mobile app, Gemini web app, and Gemini Live.

Daily Brief also requires Google Workspace to be connected to Gemini Apps and Memory to be on. Before enabling both, check which personal account holds the inbox and calendar involved, then review whether earlier Gemini chats contain details you do not want reused for personalization.

• Confirm that the signed-in account is the personal account whose Gmail and Calendar you intend to expose.
• Review Keep Activity and its retention period before creating new conversations about brief items.
• Check earlier chats for financial, medical, legal, employment, or family details that could influence later summaries.
• Remember that gradual release means an otherwise eligible account may not have Daily Brief yet.

Map each input to the control that governs it

There is no single Daily Brief privacy switch that both cuts off every input and removes previously retained information. The useful data-flow map is source, personalization control, then deletion location:

• Gmail and Google Calendar: Daily Brief primarily receives this material through the Google Workspace connection under Personal Intelligence. Workspace can also include content from services such as Drive, so disconnecting it is broader than hiding one brief item.
• Earlier Gemini chats: Memory allows past conversations to influence personalized experiences. Turning Memory off stops that use of chat history, but it does not itself delete the conversations.
• A new chat about a brief item: Starting a conversation from an item saves that chat to Gemini Apps Activity when activity storage is enabled.
• The original source record: An email remains in Gmail and an event remains in Calendar unless you delete it in that service. Deleting Gemini activity does not remove data held by other Google services.

If a recommendation looks unexpected, open the item’s More menu. Daily Brief shows the item’s source in the popup, letting you distinguish Workspace material from context derived through Personal Intelligence.

Stop the summary, Workspace access, or Memory

To stop only the morning summary on the web, go to Settings & help → Personal Intelligence and turn Daily Brief off. This is the narrowest control: it leaves other personalization settings intact and does not delete existing activity.

To stop Personal Intelligence from using Gmail and Calendar, open Settings & help → Personal Intelligence → Connected Apps on the web and turn off Google Workspace. In the mobile app, use Menu → profile picture or initial → Personal Intelligence → Connected Apps. Google’s Personal Intelligence instructions confirm that disconnecting an app does not remove information already present in past chats; Google’s prescribed removal process is to delete every chat containing the information and disconnect the app so Gemini cannot find it there again.

To prevent earlier conversations from personalizing future experiences, open Settings & help → Personal Intelligence on the web and turn Memory off. Treat this as an access control for past-chat context, not as deletion. If a particular fact should no longer remain in Gemini history, delete every chat that contains it.

Review retention and delete Gemini activity

On the web, open Settings & help → Activity; in the mobile app, open the menu, select your profile picture or initial, then choose Gemini Apps Activity. You can delete one activity item, one day, the last hour or day, a custom range, or all activity.

Google’s Gemini Apps Activity guide says activity is automatically deleted after 18 months by default, with options for 3, 18, or 36 months or no automatic deletion. It also offers Turn off and Turn off and delete activity: with Keep Activity off, future conversations do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity, but Google retains them with the account for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback.

Keep Activity is also a functional dependency. Turning it off makes Google Workspace and most other Connected Apps unavailable, so Daily Brief cannot continue using the required Workspace connection. This is broader than turning off Daily Brief or disconnecting Workspace alone.

Use both removal actions for connected information

If sensitive information came from Gmail or Calendar and also appeared in a Gemini conversation, use the two-action rule:

1. Delete every relevant conversation from Gemini Apps Activity or Recent chats.
2. Disconnect Google Workspace under Personal Intelligence so Gemini cannot retrieve the information from that connected source again.
3. If the original message or event should also disappear, delete it separately in Gmail or Google Calendar.

Deleting only the chat leaves the connected source available. Disconnecting only Workspace can leave the information in past Gemini chats, where Memory may still use it. Changes made to an item inside a connected app can also take days to affect Gemini’s personalized experience, so do not treat an immediate recommendation as proof that a deletion failed.
