YouTube Shopping Affiliate Program: Eligibility, Product Tagging and Commission Checks

To use the YouTube Shopping affiliate program, confirm that your channel is eligible in YouTube Studio, accept the affiliate terms under Earn, and choose commission-bearing products from participating retailers. You can then tag relevant products in videos, Shorts and live streams, disclose the affiliate relationship, and review estimated commissions in Studio.

Eligibility is not determined by subscriber count alone. Your channel must be in the YouTube Partner Program, based in a supported affiliate market and compliant with the program’s channel requirements; selling your own merchandise through a connected store is a separate YouTube Shopping path.

1. Check the affiliate eligibility path

YouTube lowered the affiliate threshold in 2026. Its March 25 expansion announcement says access extends to eligible YPP creators with at least 500 subscribers who meet the remaining guidelines, with product tagging available across Shorts, videos on demand and live content. Reaching 500 subscribers does not by itself place a channel in YPP or override the other affiliate conditions.

The affiliate program is different from the option to promote products from your own store. The own-store path requires a supported shop or catalogue connection; the affiliate path lets a qualifying creator select products offered by participating third-party retailers. You do not need to connect a Shopify store merely to tag those affiliate products.

Check the following before looking for enrollment controls:

  • The channel has been accepted into YPP, including through the expanded YPP route where available.
  • The channel has at least 500 subscribers.
  • The channel is based in a country currently supported by the affiliate program.
  • It is not a music channel, an Official Artist Channel or associated with a music partner.
  • Its audience is not set as Made for Kids, and it does not have a significant amount of made-for-kids content.
  • You are signed in to the correct channel with authority to accept program terms.

Market coverage is narrower than general YPP availability. The current YouTube affiliate overview lists the United States, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, India, Singapore, Brazil, Taiwan and Japan; Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom are not on that list. The same page documents enrollment under Earn → Programs, retailer-set product commissions and attribution windows, Analytics reporting, payment through AdSense for YouTube within 60–120 days of a purchase, and commission reversals when products are returned.

2. Enroll from the Earn screen

Use the eligibility offer displayed inside your own channel as the decisive check. On desktop, sign in to YouTube Studio, open Earn, find the affiliate offer under Programs, select Join Now, and review the YouTube Shopping Affiliate Program terms before accepting them. On mobile, wording and placement may differ, so verify that you are enabling the affiliate program rather than connecting a store.

After acceptance, return to Earn → Shopping and open the area for affiliate sellers and offers. Select products by exact item and retailer, paying attention to the displayed commission and any offer conditions. A product being present in the catalogue does not mean that its rate, availability or promotion will remain unchanged.

If the channel is managed by a content owner, the owner may need to accept the agreement. Do not attempt to solve that permission problem by switching browsers or repeatedly joining from an account that cannot contract for the channel.

3. Build a product check before recording

Choose products that viewers can clearly identify and that contribute to the content. A product may be demonstrated, reviewed, compared or used as part of the activity shown; an unrelated catalogue item should not be attached merely because it pays a higher rate.

Create one line in your production sheet for each intended tag:

  • Exact product name and the variant shown or discussed.
  • Retailer selected in the affiliate catalogue.
  • Commission percentage and attribution window displayed for that offer.
  • Where the product appears in the video or live run of show.
  • Whether the retailer currently shows the item as available.
  • Any payment, free product, discount or other relationship requiring disclosure.

Repeat the offer check shortly before publication. Commission terms belong to the retailer’s product offer rather than permanently to the brand, and the same item can appear under different retailer terms. Use the information visible in Studio for planning, but do not promise viewers a commission rate or availability that may change after publication.

4. Tag a standard video

A demonstrated product is matched to the correct retailer and variant before being tagged in a YouTube video.

For a new upload, complete the video details and open the product control in the publishing workflow. Search for the exact item, compare the product name, image, variant and retailer, then add only the products meaningfully featured. Arrange them to follow the order in which viewers encounter them and save the upload.

  1. Search by a specific model or item name instead of a broad category.
  2. Confirm that the selected variant matches what appears in the video.
  3. Place the principal product first when the video centers on one item.
  4. Order additional products according to the viewing sequence.
  5. Save the changes and inspect the published watch page as a viewer.

To revise an existing video, open Content in Studio, select the video, enter its product controls and update the tags. Revisit older evergreen reviews periodically: an item may be discontinued, replaced by another variant or removed from a retailer’s affiliate offers.

Bulk or suggested tagging can shorten catalogue work, but it should not replace verification. A match inferred from a title or description may select the wrong generation, size, color or retailer. Review every suggested item before saving it.

5. Tag products in Shorts

In the Short’s upload or editing flow, open the product control and choose the item that the Short actually demonstrates or discusses. Make the connection understandable within the content itself by showing or naming the product and briefly explaining why it is relevant.

The first position has particular importance because it determines the product emphasized by the Shorts shopping surface. Put the central item first and arrange any remaining tags in the order they appear. Avoid attaching several similar variants if the Short does not make clear which one is being used.

After publication, check the Short from a normal viewer account. A tag may be saved correctly while the shopping surface remains unavailable to a particular viewer because of country, product or shipping availability. Test with the intended audience market before deleting and uploading the Short again.

6. Prepare live-stream tags in advance

Add products before the broadcast whenever possible. In YouTube Studio or the Live Control Room, open the stream’s Shopping controls, select the products scheduled for demonstration, arrange them according to the run of show and confirm the retailer offer attached to each one.

During the stream, feature the item currently being discussed. Change the featured product when the conversation moves to another item rather than leaving an unrelated recommendation highlighted. For a stream with many demonstrations, a producer or authorized operator can manage the shopping controls while the host handles the presentation and chat.

Review the replay after the event. Remove tags for segments that were cancelled, preserve products that were genuinely discussed and reconsider tags attached to expired promotions or unavailable items. Ensure that the affiliate disclosure remains understandable to someone watching only the replay.

7. Make the affiliate disclosure hard to miss

A shopping tag is a purchasing control, not a complete explanation of your financial interest. Use direct language such as “I may earn a commission if you buy through the tagged products,” and place the disclosure close to the recommendation rather than only on a profile page or behind an expanded description.

For content that can affect US consumers, the FTC’s influencer disclosure guidance says material connections should be obvious, video disclosures should appear in the video, and live-stream disclosures should be repeated periodically. It also advises disclosing free or discounted products and warns that a platform’s built-in disclosure tool may not be sufficient by itself.

If the content also includes a sponsorship, paid placement or another endorsement arrangement, use YouTube’s applicable paid-promotion control in addition to a clear audience-facing statement. The appropriate wording depends on the relationship and markets involved, so do not describe an affiliate commission as an independent recommendation with no financial connection.

8. Reconcile commissions and returns

YouTube Shopping orders are reconciled against returns before affiliate commissions become approved earnings.

Treat Studio’s affiliate figure as an estimate until the underlying transaction has passed the applicable settlement process. In YouTube Analytics, choose a relevant reporting period and review the available Shopping or affiliate revenue data by content and product. Record what Studio actually reports rather than projecting revenue from views or product clicks alone.

A useful reconciliation sheet contains:

  • The video, Short or live stream associated with the activity.
  • The tagged product and selected retailer.
  • The commission rate recorded when the content was published.
  • Orders, sales or estimated commission shown for the reporting period.
  • Later adjustments associated with returns.
  • The amount that ultimately appears in the relevant AdSense for YouTube records.

Review performance weekly for editorial decisions, but reconcile money over a longer interval. Recent estimates have had less time to absorb returns, so comparing them directly with older, more settled periods can create a misleading performance ranking.

In a conditional example, suppose two videos initially show the same estimated commission, but one later receives more return adjustments. The correct financial comparison uses the adjusted amounts shown by YouTube, while the earlier estimate remains useful only as a record of initial sales activity.

9. Troubleshoot missing controls or tags

If the affiliate offer does not appear, start with channel status. Confirm that you are signed in to the intended channel, that the channel is in YPP, that it meets the subscriber threshold and that its country and audience settings satisfy the current affiliate requirements.

  • No Join Now option: verify YPP membership, subscriber count, supported country and channel type.
  • Only a store connection appears: you may be viewing the own-products Shopping path rather than the third-party affiliate offer.
  • A managed channel cannot enroll: ask the content owner or authorized administrator to review the agreement.
  • A product is absent: search the exact item and check other participating retailers; catalogue participation is not universal.
  • A saved tag is not visible: inspect the published content as a viewer and check the viewer’s country and the item’s availability.
  • An estimate declined: compare reporting periods and look for return-related adjustments before treating the change as a reporting error.

After completing these checks, contact Creator Support from the affected eligible channel. Include the channel and content URLs, screenshots of the relevant Earn or Shopping screen, the product and retailer, the viewer’s country and device, and when the problem occurred. That information helps separate eligibility, permissions, catalogue and viewer-display issues.

10. Run one controlled affiliate test

Begin with one product that is central to a high-intent content idea. Confirm the channel’s enrollment status, record the offer shown in Studio, tag the exact item, add a clear disclosure and inspect the published shopping surface from a viewer account in the target market.

Once the content has accumulated meaningful traffic, compare its shopping activity with audience retention and comments. Keep the tag when it gives viewers a useful route to a product already integral to the content; revise the choice or explanation when the connection is unclear, and remove it when the product is no longer relevant or available.

The next practical step is to document that test from selection through settlement. A small, traceable workflow will reveal whether eligibility, tagging, viewer visibility or return adjustments need attention before you expand affiliate tagging across the channel.
