Instagram Affiliate Links in Reels: The Button Is Gated, Disclosure Is Not

If Instagram shows Add products on your Reel sharing screen, you can attach an affiliate product before publishing. If the control is missing, use a clickable bio or Story destination, a requested direct message or a trackable promo code instead; typing a URL in the caption does not create a native product tag.
Access to the native control may vary, but the disclosure obligation does not. For recommendations reaching US consumers, disclose the commission inside the Reel and before truncated caption text; if a requested DM contains the recommendation or affiliate link, disclose the commission in that message too.
Use Add products when it appears
Create or upload the Reel, continue to the final sharing screen and look for Add products. Its absence is meaningful: the feature has been introduced through a limited rollout, so creators should not assume every account or market has the same publishing controls.
When the option is present, use this workflow:
- Tap Add products.
- Paste the direct product link supplied by your affiliate program, or search for the item in a participating brand’s Meta commerce catalog.
- Select the individual item that is actually shown or recommended in the Reel.
- Enable the Paid partnership label for the affiliate content.
- Add a plain-language commission disclosure to the video and caption, then publish.
Planoly’s documented publishing flow describes both the direct-link and catalog-search routes, says tagged items must exist as individual products in a Meta commerce catalog and gives a maximum of 30 products per Reel. That limit is a technical ceiling, not a reason to tag products that viewers cannot clearly match to the content.
The catalog requirement also distinguishes Add products from a general URL field. A creator cannot assume that any landing page, collection page or unrelated affiliate destination will qualify as a native product tag.
Use another clickable route when access is missing
Do not hold a finished Reel while searching for a control that the account has not received. Choose one legitimate purchasing route and make the call to action match it:
- Bio: place the direct affiliate destination or a clearly labeled landing page in your profile, then tell viewers which link to choose.
- Story: pair the Reel with a Story link sticker and identify the recommended product beside the link.
- Requested DM: invite viewers to request the link with a specific comment, then send one relevant manual or automated response.
- Promo code: display a readable code if the affiliate program attributes qualifying purchases through that code.
A caption can explain where to find the destination, but a written URL there is not equivalent to a tappable product tag. Avoid describing it as a “link in the caption” if the viewer must copy the address manually or navigate somewhere else.
For a requested-DM workflow, the response should identify the product, provide the purchasing destination and state the commission relationship. Automation changes how the message is delivered; it does not change the commercial connection the recipient needs to understand.
Apply Instagram’s label and explain the commission separately
Instagram treats posts and Reels containing third-party affiliate links as branded content. Meta’s guidance for affiliate-link posts says they should carry the Paid partnership label, although an affiliate post does not need a business partner tagged.
That label and a commission statement perform different jobs. The label applies Instagram’s platform disclosure, while wording such as “I may earn a commission if you buy through this link” tells the audience what the creator can receive. Use both where they apply rather than assuming the platform label fully explains the arrangement.
Other benefits require accurate wording too. A free product, a flat sponsorship fee and a sales commission are different material connections; disclose each connection that could affect how viewers evaluate the recommendation.
Place the US disclosure where the endorsement is seen
US guidance: the FTC requires a material connection to be disclosed clearly and conspicuously near the related endorsement. The FTC’s endorsement guidance says video disclosures should appear in the video, required Instagram caption disclosures should be visible without tapping “more,” and a platform’s built-in disclosure tool is not necessarily sufficient by itself.
For a Reel that demonstrates or recommends the product, put readable disclosure text on screen before or as the recommendation begins. When the endorsement is both spoken and visual, presenting the disclosure audibly and visually makes it more likely to reach people watching with or without sound.
In the caption, place the commission statement with the recommendation and before any text likely to be truncated. Do not hide it on the profile page, at the end of a long caption or inside a block of hashtags.
If a requested DM supplies the affiliate link or repeats the recommendation, place the disclosure in the same message. This follows the FTC’s proximity principle: the recipient should be able to see the commercial connection and purchasing route together.
Check all three placements before publishing
- Video: the commission disclosure is readable when the product recommendation appears.
- Caption: the relationship is stated before truncated text and is not buried among hashtags.
- Requested DM: the product, disclosure and affiliate destination appear together in the response.
A concise message could read: “Here is the product I mentioned. I may earn a commission if you purchase through this link: [link].” This is an illustrative template, not mandatory legal wording; revise it when the arrangement also includes payment, a gift or another benefit.
The final distinction is simple: a product tag creates a purchasing path, the Paid partnership label marks platform-defined commercial content, and the creator’s own disclosure explains the commission. The first element depends on access; the other two responsibilities do not disappear when Add products is unavailable.
