Engineers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, have unveiled a groundbreaking innovation with the development of Pulse-Fi, a system that harnesses everyday Wi-Fi devices to measure heart rate with remarkable precision.

Additionally, the engineers are working to extend the technology’s functionality to measure breathing rate, a development that could prove instrumental in diagnosing conditions such as sleep apnea. The inspiration for Pulse-Fi draws from the team’s innovative use of machine learning to filter out background noise, such as movement or environmental interference, ensuring reliable readings even from a distance of up to three meters.

This resilience, combined with its minimal hardware requirements, positions Pulse-Fi as a game-changer in personal healthcare. As the technology matures, it could reduce the reliance on wearables like smartwatches or chest straps, offering a seamless integration into daily life.
