How to Delete a Character.AI Account—and What to Check First

To permanently delete your Character.AI account on the web, open Profile Settings, choose Account, open Manage Account & Data and select Delete Account. In the mobile app, open your profile, select the settings icon and choose Remove Account. Character.AI’s account-deletion instructions say the action is permanent and cannot be reversed.

Before confirming, complete an export of anything you need, check whether a c.ai+ subscription must be cancelled through its billing provider and record any Characters you made available to others. Character.AI documents separate export controls for web and mobile, while its privacy policy says qualifying Characters may remain active after the creator deletes the account.

What to check before deleting the account

Pre-deletion inventory covering a Character.AI data export, saved content, billing and public Characters.

Treat deletion as the final step because Character.AI’s official deletion guidance says the action cannot be reversed. Complete every task that requires access to your profile before using the deletion control.

  • Verify the account: Check the profile name and sign-in identity, especially if you use multiple email addresses, Google accounts or Apple Accounts.
  • Complete the export: Start the documented export process and inspect the resulting copy before deleting the account.
  • Save irreplaceable material: Keep separate, readable copies of Character descriptions, definitions, greetings, persona text, prompts or conversation passages that you still need.
  • Inventory shared Characters: Record which Characters were made available to other users because the Character.AI privacy policy contains a retention exception for them.
  • Check c.ai+ billing: Identify whether you subscribed on the Character.AI website, through Apple or through Google Play, then manage renewal through the applicable channel.
  • Preserve confirmations: Store export files, cancellation receipts and any deletion correspondence outside Character.AI.

The official export guide explains how to start an export but does not describe the archive as a restore package for a future account. Saving important text separately is therefore a precaution: do not assume that exported material can later be imported or that it will reproduce every screen exactly as it appeared in the service.

How to export your Character.AI data first

On the web, navigate to Profile, open Profile Settings, select Account, choose Manage Account & Data and select Export data. In the mobile app, open Profile, select the settings icon and choose Export my data; both paths appear in Character.AI’s official export guide.

Exporting and deleting serve different purposes. An export preserves the material delivered through that process, while account deletion permanently closes the account. The documented export procedure does not promise that an archive transfers Characters to another account, restores a deleted profile or proves that every server-side copy has been erased.

Do not move to deletion until the export process is complete and you have saved its output somewhere independent of Character.AI. Open the delivered or downloaded material and check for the specific conversations, Character configurations and other records you intended to preserve.

If a Character definition or conversation is essential to ongoing creative work, also save it in a human-readable format. This is a risk-control recommendation, not a claim that Character.AI’s export necessarily excludes that content.

How to delete a Character.AI account on the web

The documented web route places Export data and Delete Account in the same account-management area, so confirm that you select the intended control. While signed into the account you want to remove:

  1. Navigate to your Profile.
  2. Open Profile Settings.
  3. Select Account.
  4. Open Manage Account & Data.
  5. Select Delete Account.
  6. Read the warning and complete the confirmation displayed by the service.

These menu labels and their order come from the Character.AI Help Center procedure. If the service requests an additional identity check or confirmation, follow the on-screen instructions and verify the active profile before submitting it.

Signing out, clearing browser data or removing a saved login is not account deletion. Those actions only change access from a browser or device; they do not activate the documented Delete Account control.

How to delete the account in the mobile app

In the Character.AI mobile app, open your Profile, select the settings icon and choose Remove Account. The official mobile procedure uses Remove Account as the label and describes the resulting deletion as permanent.

  1. Open Character.AI and verify that the correct profile is active.
  2. Enter the Profile area.
  3. Select the settings icon.
  4. Choose Remove Account.
  5. Review the warning and complete the requested confirmation.

Uninstalling the app is not a substitute. It removes the app from that device but does not select the account-level Remove Account control. If the mobile option is unavailable, try the documented web route while you still have access to the account.

What deletion confirms—and what remains qualified

Confirmed Character.AI account removal consequences contrasted with qualified retention of public Characters and other data.

The confirmed consequence is irreversibility: Character.AI’s account-deletion page says deletion is permanent and cannot be reversed. Plan on losing access to that deleted account rather than expecting to sign back in and restore it.

That statement does not provide an item-by-item retention guarantee. The short deletion procedure does not specify what happens, category by category, to chats, personas, submitted images or videos, voice data, security records, backups or information that has been aggregated or de-identified.

The Character.AI Privacy Policy effective July 1, 2026 says retention depends on why information is processed and on users’ choices. It says the company may delete or aggregate information after the applicable period and may retain information as needed for legal obligations, dispute resolution and enforcement of agreements.

The same privacy policy identifies an exception for Characters made available to other users. Character.AI reserves the right under that policy to preserve such a Character’s characteristics and keep the Character active after its creator deletes their data and account, to avoid disrupting other users’ experience.

Account deletion, deletion of particular personal information, aggregation and lawful retention are therefore distinct outcomes. The public retention policy does not give one universal completion period for every data category, so the disappearance of an account should not be presented as evidence that every backend copy was removed simultaneously.

How to handle a c.ai+ subscription

Check where you purchased c.ai+ before deleting the account. Character.AI’s subscription-management guide directs website customers to Settings, Account and Manage, while customers who subscribed in a mobile app are directed to Apple or Google Play.

For a website subscription, use the Manage button to enter the Customer Portal. The Character.AI billing instructions say a secure portal link is sent to the email address provided for the account, which is a practical reason to handle website billing before deleting the profile.

For Apple billing on an iPhone, open Settings, select your name, choose Subscriptions, select the subscription and tap Cancel Subscription. Apple’s cancellation instructions say that a missing Cancel button or a displayed expiration message can mean the subscription is already cancelled.

For Google Play billing, open your subscriptions in Google Play, select the relevant subscription, tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts. The Google Play procedure says uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription and that access normally continues for the period already paid after cancellation.

If you cannot locate the subscription, check the purchase receipt and payment statement to identify the billing provider and account used. Save the cancellation confirmation and shown expiration or renewal information before closing the Character.AI account.

What to do if the deletion control is missing

First confirm that you are in the intended account’s profile settings rather than a Character-specific screen. Then try the web path—Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data and Delete Account—if Remove Account is unavailable in the mobile app.

If neither interface works, use Character.AI’s official ticket form, which is provided for questions not resolved by the Help Center. Identify the affected account, describe the missing or failed control and request written confirmation after the issue is handled; never include a password, recovery code or complete payment credentials.

For a request concerning personal information rather than only account access, the Character.AI privacy policy lists the ticket form and [email protected] as contact options. It also says available rights depend on location and legal exceptions, and that Character.AI may verify the requester’s identity before responding.

Separate your questions so the company can address them precisely: ask about closing the user account, deletion of specified personal-information categories, the status of named Characters made available to others and any applicable retention exception. Do not rely on community timelines or assume the short deletion guide promises an outcome that it does not explicitly describe.

Use this order for the final exit

Verify the account, save irreplaceable material, complete and inspect the export, record shared Characters, cancel c.ai+ through the correct billing provider and preserve the confirmations. Only then use Delete Account on the web or Remove Account in the app.

If backend retention is your main concern, follow the account deletion with a focused privacy request covering the specific data categories that matter to you. Ask which material was deleted, aggregated or retained under a stated exception; that creates a clearer record than treating loss of login access as an answer to every retention question.
