What Are The Different Levels Of Background Checks

Hello!

Background checks serve a wide range of purposes, including employment screening, tenancy verification, and professional licensure approval. Security clearances are also tiered, with each level determining how much personal information is disclosed about the subject.
Level 1 Background Check
This is the most basic and least comprehensive type of background check. A Level 1 check returns only prior criminal convictions or pending charges, along with certain public records such as bankruptcies and tax liens. Criminal-record results are usually available within 24 hours, while the full report may take up to a week. The subject needs only to provide a full name and date of birth; any prior Social Security Number must also be supplied.
Level 2 Background Check

Level 3 Background Check
A Level 3 background check delivers greater detail than Levels 1 or 2. It includes a complete criminal history—covering all convictions and pending charges regardless of the state in which they occurred—plus any Type I offenses recorded in national databases. Employment-related information, such as terminations and previous employer contact details, is also provided. The civil and administrative review encompasses bankruptcies, liens, and judgments from all 50 states. Required information includes full name, date of birth, Social Security Number (or proof of applicant status), state of residence or current mailing address, and consent to release the complete criminal record, including sealed and expunged entries. Any prior Social Security Number must also be supplied.
Level 4 Background Check

Final Words
Because Level 4 checks are so extensive, applicants are usually interviewed by the prospective employer before a final decision is made. Additional consultation with local law enforcement or government agencies may be required. If the individual does not meet the necessary criteria, the report is marked “Denied” and shared with the requesting organization and any other entities conducting similar checks. Level 4 reports are also used for security clearances that exceed standard employment-review requirements.
