The ChatGPT Crypto "Buy Button" Hype: MoonPay Just Mastered the Old Plugin Scam Playbook

Twitter (sorry, X) is on absolute fire right now. Search “MoonPay is now live on ChatGPT” and watch the timeline implode with rocket emojis, “mass adoption incoming” threads, and headlines screaming that you can finally buy Bitcoin by simply whispering to your AI overlord.

Crypto Twitter is calling it a breakthrough. MoonPay is calling itself “the first and only crypto onramp integrated in ChatGPT.” Influencers are posting victory laps. Whole articles have already been written about the glorious revolution.

Cool story. Let’s actually look at what happens.

Step 1: You go to the ChatGPT App Store (yes, the same one that used to be called GPTs/plugins and was already notorious for this).
Step 2: You search “MoonPay” and install the shiny new app.
Step 3: You type the magic words everyone is hyped about — “I want to buy $1 of Bitcoin.”

What do you get?

A nice blue link that says something like “Checkout on MoonPay →”.
You click it.
Goodbye, ChatGPT. You are now permanently teleported to moonpay.com, where the real party begins: KYC, wallet connection, jurisdiction checks, payment processing, fees, and everything else MoonPay loves to handle.

The app’s own description is brutally honest if you bother to read it: “The app only generates buy-links… All payment activity, KYC, and regulatory controls occur at moonpay.com… ChatGPT does not act as an exchange, broker, wallet, custodian, or payment processor.”

In other words: exactly the same thing that happened with every shady plugin in 2023-2024. The GPT Store is still the wild west of “look ma, I’m in ChatGPT!” advertising — except now it’s dressed up with OpenAI’s logo and MoonPay’s marketing budget.

MoonPay did an incredible job. Their post with the OpenAI association went nuclear. Media picked it up instantly (“You can now buy Bitcoin inside ChatGPT!”). Nobody bothered to click the actual link in the fine print.

This isn’t “buying crypto inside ChatGPT.”
This is “ChatGPT politely hands you a flyer and kicks you out of the building.”

It’s genius marketing, zero actual product integration beyond a referral link, and the same old traffic-arbitrage game we’ve seen a hundred times. The only difference? This time the referral comes wrapped in Sam Altman’s friendly chatbot voice.

So congratulations, MoonPay — you won the internet for 48 hours.
The rest of us just learned that “integrated” now officially means “here’s an exit ticket, enjoy your KYC.”

Welcome to 2026, where even the AI can’t save you from leaving the app to do anything useful.
