Suno Revolutionizes Stem Separation: Cleaner Audio and Greater Control with Advanced Split

Suno, the leading AI-powered music generation platform, has rolled out a major upgrade to its stem separation tools. The update introduces three distinct modes — Auto Split, Split from Mix, and the brand-new Advanced Split — giving users more precision, cleaner results, and flexible options for isolating instruments and vocals from their tracks.

This improvement addresses long-standing issues with traditional stem separation while opening new creative possibilities for producers, songwriters, and musicians working in Suno’s ecosystem.

The Evolution of Stem Separation in Suno

Previously, Suno’s stem extraction (primarily through what was called Auto Split or “Get Stems”) relied on frequency-based analysis to isolate different elements of a track. While functional, this approach often resulted in imperfect separations: audio bleed between instruments, unwanted noise around isolated elements, and occasional misidentification of parts.

Suno Revolutionizes Stem Separation: Cleaner Audio and Greater Control with Advanced SplitThe new system changes the game, particularly with Advanced Split. Instead of simply carving stems out of the existing mix by frequency, Suno now uses its latest generative AI model (currently V5.5) to regenerate each stem from scratch. The AI listens to the original track and recreates the desired instrument or vocal with much higher fidelity.

Early demos and user feedback show that these regenerated stems are significantly cleaner, with minimal artifacts and better adherence to the original track’s structure, timing, and musical feel. This generative approach produces punchier, more professional-sounding isolated tracks that are far more usable in a DAW (digital audio workstation).

The Three Stem Separation Modes Explained

Suno now offers three tailored options depending on your needs:

1. Auto Split (available on Pro and Premier plans)
This is the updated version of the classic mode. It automatically analyzes your track and splits it into up to 12 preset stem categories (drums, bass, guitar, keyboards, woodwinds, vocals, and others). It remains the fastest way to get a full multi-track breakdown for mixing or remixing.

2. Split from Mix (available on Pro and Premier plans)
An enhanced evolution of the old “Vocal + Instrumental” feature. You select one specific instrument or vocal to extract. Suno then delivers two files: the isolated stem and the complementary “everything else” backing track. This mode is ideal when you need just one element (e.g., isolating a guitar solo or creating a custom instrumental for live performance) without committing to a full multi-stem split.

3. Advanced Split** (Premier plan only)
The standout new feature. Users can choose from a list of nearly 100 instruments (ranging from standard drum kit to niche options like didgeridoo, theremin, or specific synth types). You decide exactly which stems to generate. This offers unprecedented control for custom workflows.

How Advanced Split Works and Its Advantages

The core innovation in Advanced Split is its regenerative approach. Rather than relying on spectral subtraction or frequency filtering (which caused bleed and noise in older systems), the system leverages Suno’s powerful music model to synthesize a fresh, clean version of the requested stem while staying faithful to the original performance.

Suno Revolutionizes Stem Separation: Cleaner Audio and Greater Control with Advanced SplitDemos demonstrate excellent structural fidelity — the regenerated stems maintain the timing, dynamics, and musical intent of the source material far better than previous methods.

This makes the stems much more mix-ready straight out of Suno.

Note on vocals and ultra-granular stems: Official demonstrations have focused more on instrumental elements, but the technology is designed to handle vocals as well.

Extremely detailed individual drum elements (such as isolated kick or snare) are currently in beta/development and may require further refinement for optimal results.

Credit Costs and Practical Considerations

Stem separation is a credit-based feature:

  • Auto Split: 50 credits for a full set of up to 12 stems.
  • Split from Mix and Advanced Split: 10 credits per extraction. By default, the system generates two versions of the stem(s) for easy comparison, giving users options to choose the best result (or regenerate for more variations).
  • You can extract stems across multiple passes, with a practical limit around 12 tracks depending on the mode.

Pro tip from users and the update: If you only need one specific instrument or vocal and want to minimize credit usage, Split from Mix is often the more efficient choice compared to running Advanced Split for a single element.

Subscription Tiers

  • Pro Plan: Access to Auto Split and Split from Mix.
  • Premier Plan: Full access to all three modes, including the powerful Advanced Split.

Stem separation is not available on the free tier or mobile app at this time.

Why This Update Matters

Suno Revolutionizes Stem Separation: Cleaner Audio and Greater Control with Advanced SplitFor AI music creators, clean stem separation has always been a bottleneck. Previous methods often produced stems that required heavy cleanup before they could be used professionally.

The shift to generative regeneration in Advanced Split represents a meaningful leap forward — stems are now crisper, freer of artifacts, and better suited for mixing, remixing, live performance tracks, or further production in a DAW.

Whether you’re quickly splitting a full track with Auto Split, isolating a single element with Split from Mix, or crafting a highly customized multi-stem project with Advanced Split, Suno has significantly raised the bar for what’s possible directly within its platform.
