Backlink analysis tools remain useful for discovering who links to a site, which pages attract attention, where links have disappeared, and how competitors earn relevant mentions. The core workflow remains straightforward: collect the data, narrow it to a useful question, inspect the relevant pages, and record a decision.

The crucial current distinction is that a tool’s inventory is not a complete map of the web, while an authority or toxicity score is not a verdict from Google. Use those signals to prioritize investigation—not as an automatic instruction to pursue removal or upload a disavow file.

Start with a decision, not a backlink count

Before entering a domain, decide what the analysis should answer. A report configured to recover lost links needs different filters from one intended to find outreach prospects or investigate a manual action.

Choose one initial objective and configure the report around it. This prevents the largest dashboard numbers from dominating an analysis that should support a specific decision.

  • Find pages that already earn links and could support related content.
  • Recover valuable links lost after a deletion, redirect, redesign, or URL migration.
  • Identify relevant sites that link to competitors but not to your site.
  • Investigate suspicious links connected to known link-building activity or a manual action.

Match the scope to the asset under review. Use a domain view for the entire site, an exact-URL view for one product page, research asset, or article, and a subfolder view when a publication, marketplace, or documentation section must be assessed separately.

Build a baseline from more than one view

Begin with the links available for your verified property in Google Search Console, then compare them with the third-party index you have chosen. Different inventories will rarely produce identical totals, so a mismatch alone does not establish that either report is defective.

The official Search Console Links documentation states that pages are grouped by canonical URL, duplicate links are combined, interface tables are limited to 1,000 rows, and the report presents a sample rather than every known link; it can also retain links discovered in the past and does not identify nofollow attributes.

A commercial crawler supplies another observation set and may provide filters that the first-party report lacks. Do not combine exports and treat the resulting row count as a precise total; instead, retain the source tool and discovery date, normalize source and destination URLs, and decide how protocols, parameters, subdomains, and canonical variants should be handled before deduplication.

Read the report in a useful order

Start with referring domains, not raw backlink volume. One site can generate many repeated links through navigation, templates, feeds, or copied pages, so a domain-level view makes the diversity and relevance of linking sites easier to assess.

Next, open the individual backlinks behind the domains that matter. The current Ahrefs Backlinks documentation identifies referring-page and destination-page fields and describes filters for link attributes, competitor backlinks, historical records, and new, lost, or restored links.

Interpret vendor metrics as sorting aids. A domain-level authority metric can reduce a large export, but it cannot establish whether a particular link is editorially earned, relevant to the destination, visible to readers, or still present.

Open each important referring page when it is safe and available. Check that the link exists, resolves to the reported destination, appears in meaningful context, and is not repeated across many near-identical pages; if the page cannot be inspected, mark the row as unverified.

Turn competitor links into realistic prospects

Competitor analysis works best when the comparison is narrow. Select sites competing for the same audience, topic, product category, or search result rather than relying on large brands from the same broad industry.

Apply the same scope and filters to each competitor, then group referring pages by the apparent reason the link exists. Useful groups can include research citations, expert commentary, editorial directories, resource pages, product comparisons, partnerships, event pages, and links to retired content.

The opportunity is not the competitor’s backlink itself; it is the repeatable reason an editor or organization chose to link. A research citation may reveal demand for original data, while a broken destination may create a reclamation opportunity when your site has a close and credible replacement.

Some links will not translate into viable outreach. Paid sponsorships, private partnerships, and relationship-based mentions can remain in the research record without entering the prospect queue.

Separate link recovery from link cleanup

Lost-link review usually produces clearer actions than broad toxicity cleanup. Check whether the destination now returns an error, redirects through unnecessary hops, points to an outdated asset, or was replaced without a suitable redirect.

The appropriate response may be to restore the page, improve the redirect, or contact the publisher with the correct destination. Prioritize links from relevant pages that remain live and appear capable of sending readers to the intended resource.

For suspicious links, distinguish observable evidence from appearance. Investigate whether your organization or a former supplier created paid, exchanged, automated, or otherwise manipulative links, and retain records of contracts, outreach, removal attempts, and the exact URLs involved.

Google’s current disavow instructions warn that incorrect use can harm search performance, state that most sites do not need the tool, and recommend it only when a considerable volume of spammy, artificial, or low-quality links has caused or is likely to cause a manual action, after removal has been attempted. An automated toxic-link label is therefore a review flag, not sufficient evidence for disavowal.

Keep a record for the next review

A useful audit ends with an action register rather than a dashboard screenshot. For each important finding, record the source and destination, what was observed on the live page, the intended action, the owner, and the review date.

Store observations from live pages separately from vendor labels. This preserves the distinction between evidence—such as a missing link or broken destination—and a classification generated by a tool.

Track outcomes that match the original objective: restored links for reclamation, qualified prospects and earned placements for outreach, or resolved issues during a manual-action response. Backlink totals can provide context, but shifts in a crawler’s index may change them even when no action was taken on the site.

Repeat the analysis after migrations, substantial content removals, changes in link-building suppliers, or unexpected movement among important referring domains. Between those events, alerts for valuable lost links and focused periodic reviews are generally more actionable than repeatedly scanning every low-scoring domain.
