Factory Tour Headsets Carry the Briefing—Not the Hearing Protection

The factory-tour headset category now extends well beyond a guide’s transmitter and a row of passive receivers. Current systems can provide full-duplex conversation, multiple authorized speakers, interpretation channels and access controls, making the buying decision less about “one-way or two-way” and more about the exact communication workflow.
One limitation has not changed: a tour system makes speech easier to follow, but it does not automatically protect anyone from hazardous noise. A credible specification therefore starts with the plant’s safety requirements, then selects radios, microphones and listening equipment that can operate without compromising the required personal protective equipment.
Start with the noise assessment, not the headset catalog
A communication earpiece and a hearing protector perform different jobs. A receiver delivers the guide’s voice; a hearing-protection device is selected and evaluated to reduce the wearer’s noise exposure. Descriptions such as “noise cancelling,” “noise reduction” or “clear audio” do not establish that an ordinary tour headset has an approved attenuation rating.
In the United States, OSHA’s occupational-noise guidance says general-industry employers must implement a hearing-conservation program when employee exposure reaches an eight-hour time-weighted average of 85 dBA. It also identifies quieter equipment, isolation, exposure limits and effective hearing protectors as control measures. Those employee-exposure thresholds should not be misrepresented as a universal allowance for every visitor, country or short tour; the plant’s safety team must define the applicable route and PPE.
Where hearing protection is required, the useful procurement question is not simply whether the tour system is loud enough. Ask how its audio will be delivered while the approved protection remains correctly fitted. Possible configurations include a compatible audio input on protective earmuffs, communication headsets carrying an appropriate protection rating, or another arrangement approved for that site. Turning up a conventional earbud beneath or beside protective equipment is not a substitute for that assessment.
Choose the conversation model before comparing range
A one-way system remains efficient when one trained guide delivers a controlled briefing and questions can wait until the group reaches a quiet stop. Each guest needs a receiver and listening interface, while only the guide—or a small number of presenters—needs a microphone. This reduces participant controls, accidental transmissions and equipment-management work.
Two-way equipment is justified when the tour depends on immediate questions, technical interviews, training checks or coordination between separated staff. “Two-way,” however, is not a complete specification. Some systems require participants to take turns or request permission to speak; full-duplex products can carry speech in both directions without the same push-to-talk rhythm.
The category’s current capabilities are illustrated by Williams AV’s Digi-Wave specifications, which list one-way and two-way modes, full-duplex operation with as many as six simultaneous talkers, PIN protection, encryption and interpretation functions. These are capabilities of that named product family, not promises that apply to every tour system. They show why a buyer should specify the required number of live speakers, languages and subgroups rather than purchase on the word “interactive” alone.
Confirm frequencies and coverage at the actual facility
Published outdoor range is a weak proxy for performance beside metal racks, production cells, walls and moving equipment. The useful test is a complete walk of the intended route while machinery, radios and wireless networks are operating normally. Include stairways, lifts, enclosed rooms and the point at which a group may become stretched out.
Frequency compatibility is also regional. The official Sennheiser Tourguide 2020-D manual specifies 863–865 MHz for one version and 926–928 MHz for the US version; it also documents six tour channels and model-dependent receiver operating times. The practical lesson is broader than this example: record the precise regional model and permitted band, and do not assume that a fleet bought for one country can lawfully or reliably be moved to another.
During a site trial, listen for dropouts and interference rather than judging only maximum distance. Test all channels planned for simultaneous groups, and place two tours close enough to expose channel-planning problems. If confidential processes or commercially sensitive discussions will be covered, establish whether access control and encryption are mandatory and how devices are paired, reset and audited.
Specify the guest experience as a complete kit
A usable system includes more than a transmitter and receiver count. The bill of materials should identify guide microphones, guest listening options, protective interfaces where necessary, lanyards or belt clips, chargers, cases, spare batteries, disposable hygiene items and enough reserve units to replace failures without delaying the tour.
Microphone choice affects intelligibility and guide behavior. A head-worn or lapel microphone keeps the guide’s hands free, but its position must remain consistent as the guide turns or walks. A handheld microphone offers deliberate control and can be passed to an approved speaker, although doing so may be impractical around handrails, samples or mandatory gloves.
Guest receivers need simple volume and channel controls that cannot be changed too easily by accident. Consider whether visitors use one ear, two ears, an induction loop or an approved protective headset. Accessibility should be planned in advance: obtain compatible options for hearing-aid users and decide how interpreted audio will be assigned without forcing staff to reconfigure the fleet at the entrance.
Run an operational trial before committing to a fleet
A short demonstration in a meeting room cannot reveal the problems that determine whether a factory tour succeeds. Use the proposed production route and a representative group, then document results so competing systems are judged under the same conditions.
- Map the tour route, noise-controlled areas, mandatory PPE, quiet briefing points and places where the group may split.
- Configure the real number of concurrent groups, presenters and language channels rather than testing a single guide-receiver pair.
- Walk the route during normal operations and record speech intelligibility, dropouts, interference, control errors and any conflict with protective equipment.
- Repeat the test with the guide at the front and rear of an extended group, then test a lost receiver, low battery and channel change.
- Time distribution, fitting, hygiene turnover, collection and charging; these tasks often determine the practical capacity between tours.
The acceptance standard should be observable: every participant receives the correct channel, safety instructions remain understandable at designated points, required PPE stays properly fitted, and the system lasts through the scheduled operating period with an agreed reserve. A claimed range or battery figure can help shortlist equipment, but it cannot replace this route test.
Buy for controlled operation, not a feature count
The most economical system is the one the site can issue, supervise and recover reliably. One-way receivers may be the better business choice for large, scripted visitor groups; full-duplex transceivers can justify their extra complexity for training, audits and technical discussions. Interpretation, security and subgroup functions matter only when the tour process actually uses them.
Before approving a purchase or rental, assign ownership of charging, firmware or configuration changes, hygiene supplies, inventory checks and replacement units. Keep the safety briefing independent of the technology: guides need a procedure for stopping the group, moving to a safe location and communicating if the wireless system fails. That boundary is the essential one—a tour headset supports the briefing, while the plant’s risk controls and approved protective equipment protect the people hearing it.
