California Poised to Become First State to Regulate AI Chatbots

In the murky waters of artificial intelligence, legal frameworks are finally starting to take shape. California is on the verge of passing a groundbreaking bill that would regulate AI-based chatbots, with a focus on protecting minors and vulnerable users.

The legislation gained momentum following the tragic suicide of a local teenager who had been interacting with ChatGPT, highlighting the urgent need for oversight in AI interactions.

Set to take effect next year, the bill introduces several key requirements for AI chatbot operators. Chatbots will be mandated to periodically remind users -particularly minors - that they are engaging with an artificial system and may need to take a break.

For children, these reminders must appear at least every three hours. Additionally, AI companies will be required to provide full and transparent reporting on their systems’ operations. Perhaps most significantly, the legislation empowers users to sue for damages if they believe a chatbot has violated their rights or caused harm.
