Apple has held internal discussions about acquiring AI startups Mistral AI and Perplexity AI, though the talks remain in early stages and are marked by internal disagreements. Services chief Eddy Cue is the leading advocate for the deal, while software head Craig Federighi favors developing AI technologies in-house.
Acquiring either company would mark Apple’s largest-ever deal, surpassing the $3 billion Beats acquisition in 2014. Mistral is valued at around $10 billion, while Perplexity’s valuation ranges from $14 to $18 billion.
The decision is complicated by uncertainty surrounding Apple’s multibillion-dollar agreement with Google, which secures Google’s default search engine status on iPhones. A potential shift in this partnership could influence Apple’s strategic direction.
