A VPN still does two important jobs: it creates an encrypted connection between your device and a VPN server, and it substitutes the server’s public IP address for the one normally presented by your connection. Those capabilities support seven practical uses, from safer remote access to regional website testing—but they do not make you invisible online.

The most important update is that a VPN is no longer the only barrier protecting ordinary browsing on public Wi-Fi. Most websites now use HTTPS, so the FTC’s current public Wi-Fi advice says such connections are usually safe while still recommending strong passwords, two-factor authentication and software updates. A VPN remains an additional privacy and security layer, especially when you do not control the network.

What the VPN changes—and what it does not

Without a VPN, internet traffic normally travels from your device through a local network and internet provider before reaching its destination. With one enabled, the first portion of that journey is carried through an encrypted tunnel to the VPN server; Cloudflare’s 2026 technical overview describes the tunnel and explains that the destination receives the VPN server’s IP address instead of the user’s usual public address.

This arrangement shifts trust rather than eliminating it. The café operator or internet provider has less visibility into traffic carried through the tunnel, but the VPN operator occupies a privileged position in the connection. Your choice of service, its handling of logs, its security record and the protection of your account therefore matter.

A changed IP address is also not a new identity. A website may still recognize a signed-in account, stored cookies, information supplied in forms, browser characteristics or location permission granted to an app. A VPN cannot remove malware, prevent a user from entering a password on a phishing page or repair an unpatched device.

Seven things worth doing with a VPN

1. Add protection on a network you do not control

Activating a VPN before using hotel, airport or café Wi-Fi protects the traffic routed through its tunnel from local observation. This is most useful for applications whose transport security is uncertain, and for people who want a consistent protective layer instead of evaluating every network they encounter.

It is not permission to ignore browser warnings. Confirm the hotspot name, prefer HTTPS, keep sharing features disabled on public networks and avoid continuing when a certificate or security warning appears. If a captive portal prevents the VPN from connecting, complete only the network’s required sign-in, then verify that the tunnel is active before doing anything sensitive.

2. Reduce what the local network and internet provider can observe

A VPN can prevent the access network and internet provider from directly seeing the destinations and contents carried inside the encrypted tunnel. They can still generally determine that a connection exists, observe its timing and volume, and identify the VPN server being contacted.

The VPN provider may receive some of the visibility removed from the provider of the underlying connection. For this reason, “free” is not a sufficient selection criterion. Read the privacy policy, identify the company operating the service, determine what data it says it retains and use strong authentication for the VPN account.

3. Present a different public IP address

Connecting through a server in another city or country changes the source IP address presented to online services. This can be useful when a site relies on IP-based location, when you want to avoid exposing your usual home IP to every destination, or when you need to compare how a service responds from different network regions.

The result is only an approximate network-location change. A phone can still reveal precise location through its operating-system permission, while an account profile may retain a home country, billing address or previous activity. Disable unnecessary location access and sign out when the purpose is to observe a site without account-based personalization.

4. Reach an authorized private network remotely

Remote access is one of the clearest VPN applications. A company, university or household can expose internal files, administrative tools or other private services through an authenticated tunnel instead of publishing those services openly on the internet.

The UK National Cyber Security Centre’s VPN guidance confirms that encrypted connections can provide remote access to organizational services, while warning that only traffic routed through the VPN is protected. Use the organization’s approved client and configuration; a consumer VPN subscription does not automatically grant access to an employer’s private systems.

5. Check how a website behaves in another region

Developers, publishers and online sellers can use servers in selected regions to inspect IP-dependent behavior. Useful checks include whether a page loads, which language or currency it selects, whether a regional notice appears, and whether an incorrectly configured security rule blocks legitimate visitors.

This is a diagnostic aid, not a complete substitute for local testing. The VPN’s exit server may be classified as data-center traffic, and a service can combine IP information with cookies, account settings or device signals. Record the selected server and repeat the check without stored site data before treating a difference as genuinely regional.

6. Reach lawful information when a local network blocks it

Because requests travel first to the VPN server, the tunnel may bypass filtering imposed by a school, workplace, hotel or internet access provider. That can restore access when a network blocks a legitimate resource by mistake or applies broad restrictions that are irrelevant to the user’s situation.

A VPN does not create a right to evade access controls. Local law, workplace policy, school rules and a website’s terms may restrict its use, and some networks or services block known VPN addresses. In a tightly controlled environment, consider whether attempting a bypass could expose the user or account to consequences before connecting.

7. Apply one connection policy across changing networks

An always-on or automatically reconnecting VPN can give a device a consistent route as it moves between home broadband, mobile data and public Wi-Fi. This is particularly valuable for managed work devices, where an administrator may need traffic to pass through organizational monitoring or filtering regardless of the access network.

Check whether the configuration covers the entire device, selected apps or only private network destinations. Split tunneling deliberately sends some traffic outside the VPN, while a dropped manual connection can leave later traffic unprotected. A kill switch or forced-tunnel setting may reduce that gap, although it can also leave the device offline when the VPN service fails.

Claims a VPN cannot safely promise

Do not buy a VPN solely for guaranteed anonymity, faster internet or automatic savings. Encryption and rerouting add processing and distance, so performance may improve only in particular routing or throttling situations and may instead decline. Prices can depend on accounts, dates, inventory, taxes and other inputs beyond an IP address; changing servers proves neither that a quoted deal is comparable nor that a purchase complies with the seller’s rules.

Streaming access is similarly conditional. An exit IP may affect the catalog or page shown, but platforms can detect VPN ranges, require a matching account region or restrict location changes under their terms. Treat regional access as a possible side effect of changing network location, not as a service guarantee.

A quick decision rule

A VPN is a good fit when the task depends on one of three properties: an encrypted route across an untrusted network, an authorized path into a private network, or a different public exit IP. If the actual problem is phishing, account theft, malware, invasive app permissions or a compromised device, use the control that addresses that problem—such as multi-factor authentication, updates, permission changes or security software.

Before relying on the connection, verify that the expected server is active, decide which apps and traffic the tunnel covers, and understand what happens if it drops. That turns a VPN from a vague privacy promise into a tool with a defined job and visible limits.
