Threads Explains Reach With AI—but Link-Click Data Disappears

Threads started a U.S.-first rollout of redesigned creator Insights on September 8, 2026. The update adds AI-written performance summaries, comparisons with each account’s normal results and a clearer split between reach from followers and non-followers.

The expanded panel still does not show link-click statistics, so it cannot complete the measurement path from discovery on Threads to an action on a website, newsletter or store. In the official rollout post, Threads presents the redesign as a way to explain post performance and show how much reach comes from followers versus people who have not followed the account.

What the redesigned Insights panel reveals

Threads Insights summarizes post performance and separates follower from non-follower reach

The main change is an interpretation layer above the underlying metrics. Written summaries cover individual posts and overall account performance, while measures such as post views, profile visits and follows can be classified as higher, typical or lower than the creator’s own norm.

That personal benchmark answers a more useful question than a standalone count: whether a result is unusual for this account. It does not create a universal standard across creators, whose audiences, publishing patterns and typical reach may differ substantially.

The follower-versus-non-follower split gives creators a clearer view of distribution. Reach among existing followers shows exposure within the established audience; non-follower reach shows that a post traveled beyond it. The panel can also add context about which Threads communities engaged with a post.

A metric map separates reach from conversion

Threads metrics separate discovery and engagement from externally measured conversion

The redesigned panel becomes easier to interpret when its measures are grouped by the outcome they actually observe. “Performance” covers several stages that may move independently:

  • Discovery: views, viewers and follower-versus-non-follower reach describe how widely a post circulated and whether it reached people outside the existing audience.
  • Engagement: likes, replies, reposts and quotes record responses made within Threads.
  • Audience development: profile visits and follows show whether attention produced a deeper relationship on the platform.
  • Conversion: visits and completed actions at an external destination show what happened after someone left Threads.

The distinction prevents a common analytical leap. Strong non-follower reach establishes wider discovery, but it does not demonstrate that people clicked a link. Replies and reposts likewise show in-app activity without proving that a post generated website sessions, registrations or purchases.

Creators can therefore use the new panel to evaluate circulation and response inside Threads, but not the full off-platform journey. That boundary matters most for accounts whose objective is referral traffic rather than conversation or audience growth within the app.

Link-click data disappeared before the redesign

A tagged Threads link connects a post to visits and conversions measured outside the app

The timing is narrower than the headline change may suggest. According to Engadget’s examination of the new panel, Threads removed link-click statistics before this redesign, at an unspecified time, and did not restore them in the expanded experience. A Meta spokesperson told the publication that the company was exploring the feature but gave neither a reason for its removal nor a return date.

That means the September update added analytical context while preserving an existing conversion blind spot. There is currently no native figure connecting a particular Threads post with the number of people who selected its external link.

A practical fallback is to assign each post or campaign a uniquely tagged destination URL. Standard campaign parameters can identify Threads as the source, organic social as the channel and the specific post or initiative as the campaign. Website or commerce analytics can then isolate visits and subsequent events associated with those tags.

  1. Create a distinct tagged URL for the post or campaign instead of repeatedly using an unlabelled destination.
  2. Record the URL tag, corresponding post and publication time in a campaign log.
  3. Measure visits and defined destination events, such as completed registrations or purchases, in the receiving analytics system.
  4. Compare those outcomes with Threads reach and engagement without treating the two measurement systems as interchangeable.

Destination sessions are not an exact substitute for native clicks. A visitor may select a link but leave before the page loads, tracking may be blocked, and redirects or attribution settings may alter classification. Tagged URLs restore a traceable route to off-platform outcomes, not the missing in-app click count itself.

AI summaries need a metric-level check

The summaries can surface an unusual result quickly, but they should not be read as causal proof. A statement that a post performed above the account’s norm establishes a comparison with recent activity; it does not establish that the topic, format, timing or participating community caused the difference.

A useful validation rule is to match every material statement in a summary with the metric that could support it. A claim about broader discovery should correspond with reach and the follower split. A claim about stronger engagement should be visible in likes, replies, reposts or quotes rather than inferred from views alone.

Creators should also distinguish description from explanation. The panel may identify that a community contributed engagement or that a result was higher than usual, but several variables can change between posts. Repeated patterns across comparable posts provide stronger evidence than one automated reading of one result.

What remains unresolved

The known change is a U.S.-first rollout of creator Insights with AI-written summaries, account-specific benchmarks and clearer follower-versus-non-follower reach reporting. Wider availability is planned, but the reviewed rollout information does not provide a market-by-market schedule.

Threads has also not supplied a native replacement for link-click reporting or a timetable for restoring it. For now, Insights can explain discovery, engagement and audience development inside the platform, while tagged links and destination analytics provide a separate, imperfect view of off-platform conversion.
