SoundCloud Opens Direct Sales—but the Zero-Commission Beta Fits 200 Artists

SoundCloud’s August 26, 2026 launch notice places direct music purchases in beta for approximately 200 U.S.-based Artist Pro creators with Fan Support enabled. Those selected artists can sell downloadable tracks from their profiles at prices they set.

SoundCloud takes no platform commission from these purchases, but zero commission does not guarantee that the artist receives the full listed price. Standard fees and applicable taxes remain, and access has not yet opened to Artist Pro subscribers generally.

The beta adds a purchase to the existing track page

A SoundCloud profile turns an eligible streamed track into a purchased artist-supplied download recorded in the creator’s sales tools.

Participating artists can turn an eligible streamed track into a paid download without moving the buyer to another marketplace. Fans discover, purchase and download the music within SoundCloud, while the creator supplies the file offered after checkout.

The artist controls the track price and available format. Music Business Worldwide’s account of the purchase workflow identifies MP3 and WAV as examples and says participating creators can follow sales through Artist Studio and the Fan Support Dashboard.

MP3 and WAV are examples rather than a guaranteed pair of options for every sale: the buyer receives whichever format the artist provides for that eligible track. The release is therefore operational for the selected cohort, but it remains a limited test rather than a platform-wide storefront.

Artist Pro and Fan Support are necessary, but selection still matters

A U.S.-based SoundCloud creator meets the Artist Pro and Fan Support conditions but still requires selection for the limited beta.

The current eligibility test is narrower than simply paying for Artist Pro. A creator needs all of the following conditions to sell through the initial beta:

  • Inclusion in SoundCloud’s selected beta cohort.
  • A United States–based creator account.
  • An active Artist Pro subscription.
  • Fan Support enabled on the account.
  • An eligible track with an artist-set price and a downloadable file.

Artist Pro membership and Fan Support do not independently unlock direct sales. SoundCloud chose the starting group, and the published launch information does not provide a public application route for creators outside it.

That distinction matters for artists checking their accounts now. The absence of a sales option does not necessarily mean that an otherwise qualifying subscription is misconfigured; it may simply mean the creator was not selected for this phase.

Zero commission is not the same as gross price paid out

SoundCloud direct-sale proceeds separate zero platform commission from fees, taxes and the artist’s resulting net revenue.

Zero commission refers only to SoundCloud’s platform percentage. Artists keep the sale proceeds after the remaining deductions rather than automatically receiving every dollar shown in the buyer-facing price. Coverage describing the transaction terms identifies payment-processing fees and applicable taxes as deductions from the purchase price.

A transparent net-revenue worksheet should therefore keep the platform cut separate from transaction costs:

  1. Gross sales: artist-set price multiplied by completed purchases.
  2. SoundCloud commission: zero under the beta terms.
  3. Payment processing: the processing charge actually itemized for the transactions.
  4. Other standard fees: any additional charge identified in the sales or payout record.
  5. Applicable taxes: subtract only amounts reflected as deductions from the artist’s proceeds.
  6. Net proceeds: gross sales minus processing costs, other itemized fees and applicable taxes.

Consider a hypothetical track priced at $10 with ten completed purchases. Gross sales equal $100 and the SoundCloud commission line remains $0; net proceeds equal $100 minus the fees and taxes recorded for those purchases.

The launch information does not supply a universal processing percentage or fixed per-transaction charge. Substituting an assumed rate would therefore create a false estimate: until SoundCloud publishes more detailed terms, the exact net percentage must come from the beta participant’s transaction or payout records.

The fall expansion has no exact date or complete eligibility rules

SoundCloud intends to widen access gradually during the beta and make direct purchases available to all eligible creators later in fall 2026. Digital Music News’s description of the rollout preserves that limited wording rather than treating the feature as immediately available to every subscriber.

“All eligible creators” does not necessarily mean all creators or every Artist Pro account. SoundCloud has not specified an exact expansion date, defined the full later-stage eligibility test or clarified whether access beyond the initial U.S. cohort will extend to additional countries during the promised fall phase.

As of the launch, direct downloads are available only to the selected U.S. beta group: artists set the price, SoundCloud takes no commission, and transaction-related costs can still reduce the payout. The next material disclosures are the wider rollout date, the final eligibility boundaries and enough fee detail for creators to forecast net proceeds before listing a track.
