Fix Your YouTube Media Kit Before Public Views Inflate the Pitch

YouTube’s public view count now begins when playback starts across all formats, so it cannot show whether viewers stayed. In a sponsor kit, place that reach figure beside private engaged views, watch time, average view duration or percentage viewed, retention and audience geography.

Build the sponsor-facing summary as one decision-ready page. Label every metric by content format, reporting period and source, then add the proposed deliverables and comparable campaign outcomes. The buyer should be able to separate public reach, private attention and historical results without inferring what a number means.

Start with YouTube’s kit, then edit for the buyer

A creator customizes YouTube’s downloadable Media Kit to retain sponsor-relevant channel and audience information.

If your channel is in the YouTube Partner Program, use the downloadable Media Kit as a starting point. YouTube’s Media Kit instructions confirm that YPP creators can view and download it through the Earn page in YouTube Studio on desktop; available material includes channel statistics and demographics, audience and shopping categories, paid product-placement videos and top videos.

Treat the PDF as source material rather than the finished pitch. Keep the channel facts, audience categories and videos relevant to the advertiser, and hide cards that do not help the buyer evaluate the proposed placement. A software company, for example, may learn more from the geographic profile and performance of comparable tutorials than from a broad entertainment category.

Add a methodology line beneath the figures: Source: YouTube Studio; period: trailing 90 days; format: long-form. Replace those terms with the settings actually used. If fields cover different periods, label them separately instead of presenting them as a comparable set.

Separate public starts from private attention

Public YouTube views are separated from private engaged views, watch time and retention by content format.

Beginning August 24, 2026, YouTube counts a public view when a video starts playing across Shorts, long-form videos and live streams. Its engagement-metrics documentation also confirms that the change does not affect YPP earnings, which remain based on engaged views and engaged watch hours.

That makes the visible total useful for reach but insufficient as evidence of sustained attention. Label it Public views, then show private engaged views and at least one depth measure: watch time, average view duration, average percentage viewed or retention at a specified point. Because an immediate start can enter the public count, quoting that total alone can make the pitch appear stronger without proving that viewers remained.

Keep Shorts, long-form videos and live streams in separate rows. Runtime and viewing behaviour differ by format, so the primary comparison should match the proposed integration. This preserves the commercially important distinction between attention and raw reach.

Show the audience that matters to the sponsor

Pair attention with audience fit. Show the countries or regions relevant to the campaign, using the same period and content format as the performance figures. Add age, gender or audience-interest fields only when they affect the sponsor’s decision, and do not describe an estimated segment as a verified customer profile.

Use a percentage together with its reporting base. A clearly marked hypothetical entry such as “United States: 38% of watch time; trailing 90 days; long-form” is more interpretable than “strong US audience.” If a field is limited or unavailable, say so rather than substituting subscriber location or an unsupported estimate.

Connect the selected audience data to the proposed placement in one sentence. A meal-preparation brand may need the audience profile of recipe videos, while a business-software sponsor may care about the geography and attention of tutorial viewers. Keep this rationale separate from the raw Studio labels so editorial interpretation is not mistaken for platform data.

Make campaign evidence auditable

Prior YouTube campaign outcomes are labeled by deliverable, measurement window and source, apart from organic benchmarks.

Include a previous campaign only when its deliverable and measurement basis are clear. Name the format, publication date, measurement window and result. Engaged views and watch time come from platform analytics; clicks, tracked conversions or sales may come from the advertiser or another system, so identify the source of each field.

GAMURS Group’s sponsorship analysis recommends defining which view governs performance and requiring engaged views in reporting instead of relying only on the public number. Apply that distinction before a deal is signed: state whether a target, price calculation or make-good uses public views, engaged views, clicks or conversions.

Do not present an organic channel average as a paid-campaign result. If no completed sponsorship can be disclosed, use a row titled Relevant organic benchmark, identify the comparable content set and describe the figure as directional evidence rather than campaign performance.

Use this one-page sponsor template

  1. Channel and proposition: channel name, concise subject focus, sponsor fit and contact details.
  2. Public reach: median public views for a defined set of recent comparable videos; specify the format, number of videos and publication window.
  3. Private attention: median engaged views, watch time and either average view duration, average percentage viewed or retention at a stated point; identify YouTube Studio as the source.
  4. Audience fit: relevant countries or regions plus only the demographic or interest fields needed for the decision, all tied to a named period.
  5. Deliverables: integration type, approximate placement, video format, usage rights, exclusivity, disclosure requirements and reporting schedule.
  6. Evidence: one or two comparable campaign outcomes, or clearly labeled organic benchmarks when campaign data is unavailable.

Keep supporting screenshots in an appendix or ready for verification rather than shrinking an analytics dashboard onto the main page. Before sending, check that every percentage has a clear base, every average is identified as a mean or median, and every figure has a date range. Remove claims such as “highly engaged” unless the page supplies the attention metric behind them.
