ChatGPT Ads Can Start a Sponsored Conversation—Independent Answers Stay Separate

On September 16, 2026, OpenAI began a limited U.S. test of Sponsored Agents with select advertisers. Under the design described in OpenAI’s product announcement, a person can click a ChatGPT ad and choose to open a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent, distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answer and separate from the original chat.

The test does not give advertisers control over ordinary answers. PPC Land’s independent launch report confirms the September 16 date, the select-advertiser U.S. scope and the separate post-click conversation, while noting that OpenAI has not disclosed what advertisers receive from the exchange, which model operates the agent or how the format is priced.

The commercial boundary begins after the click

The product has three stages. ChatGPT first produces its independent response to the user’s request. A relevant paid placement may then appear, and only a user who selects that ad can enter the advertiser-sponsored conversation.

Inside the sponsored exchange, the user can explain what matters, ask follow-up questions about the advertised product or service and follow a link to the business’s website. OpenAI illustrates the format with a dining-table ad: the shopper might ask whether the table fits a room, how many people it seats or how to care for its finish.

The label and the separate conversation are essential because the sponsored agent represents a business rather than a neutral continuation of ChatGPT’s advice. The title’s promise is therefore a description of OpenAI’s declared product architecture: commercial influence is meant to start at the voluntary handoff, while the preceding answer remains independent. It is not yet an independently audited guarantee that the boundary cannot be breached.

Ads Manager shapes campaigns, not the preceding answer

The accompanying advertiser tools operate on the campaign side of that boundary. An Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT Work lets advertisers use natural-language prompts to create, update and analyze campaigns, turn a website or brief into campaign material, examine performance and request recommendations.

Ads Manager can also suggest copy and imagery from a landing page and campaign objective. Advertisers can review and edit those suggestions before deciding whether to add them to a campaign. A separate opt-in feature can adapt existing headlines and descriptions to the context of a conversation and translate the copy into the user’s preferred language.

These controls cover campaign inputs, ad creative and the sponsored interaction. The disclosed design does not give advertisers a comparable review or approval gate over ChatGPT’s independent answer. Nor does it explain the technical enforcement behind that separation, so the public evidence establishes an intended boundary but not its implementation details.

Shopify and HubSpot connect to the advertiser layer

HubSpot and Shopify provide operational routes into ChatGPT Ads rather than routes into ChatGPT’s ordinary response generation. HubSpot, described as the first CRM partner, allows businesses to connect a ChatGPT Ads account, create ads, track performance and follow up on leads using their HubSpot context.

Shopify is the first ecommerce partner. U.S.-based merchants can use the ChatGPT Ads app to create and manage campaigns, draw products from Shopify Catalog and track performance. International availability is scheduled to begin September 23 in markets where ChatGPT Ads is offered; that timetable concerns the Shopify app, not an expansion of the U.S.-only Sponsored Agents test.

The resulting map has distinct functions. Shopify supplies catalog and measurement infrastructure, HubSpot supports campaign work and lead follow-up, and Ads Manager governs campaign creation and creative choices. The sponsored agent sits on the consumer-facing side of that commercial system after an ad click; none of the three integrations is presented as a mechanism for rewriting the independent answer shown before it.

Separation does not prove impartial recommendations

A visible disclosure can identify when a business is speaking, but it cannot by itself demonstrate that the surrounding recommendation system is impartial. That is a separate question, especially when an independent product recommendation and a paid invitation can appear during the same user journey.

A paper submitted on September 16, an audit of AI-generated product recommendations, built a dataset of 2,528 real commercial-advice queries and evaluated 1,536 product-query responses from ChatGPT, Gemini and Google Search AI Overviews. The researchers found that recommendations could change across repeated requests and that consumer interfaces differed substantially from corresponding APIs, leading them to warn that neither isolated answers nor API observations necessarily represent what consumers encounter.

The study did not examine Sponsored Agents and does not show that advertising altered ChatGPT’s independent answers. Its narrower relevance is methodological: testing the independence claim requires repeated observations in the consumer-facing product, not an inference from one answer or an API result. Labeling addresses disclosure; impartiality requires a different form of evidence.

The test leaves enforcement and data flow unresolved

Sponsored Agents remain a limited experiment with select U.S. advertisers, with no disclosed date for general access. The published material also leaves open what conversation data an advertiser receives, how the sponsored agent is configured, how separation from the original chat is enforced and which measurements will be available for the interaction.

What is established is the intended handoff: an independent answer comes first, an ad can offer a labeled entry point, and the user may then open a separate conversation sponsored by the business. Ads Manager, Shopify and HubSpot support the commercial layer around that exchange. Whether the separation remains reliable at scale will require technical disclosure and independent testing that the initial announcement does not provide.
