Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is getting a follow-up titled The Continuing Adventures of Cliff Booth, according to a recent Deadline report.

The project, set to stream on Netflix, brings together a powerhouse trio: Tarantino as the screenwriter, David Fincher as the director, and Brad Pitt reprising his Oscar-winning role as the enigmatic stuntman Cliff Booth.

This unexpected collaboration has sparked intrigue across the film industry, blending Tarantino’s nostalgic flair with Fincher’s meticulous, often darker lens.

The sequel will focus on Cliff Booth, the laid-back yet lethal war veteran and stuntman from the 2019 film, now navigating 1970s Hollywood as a “studio fixer.” Set eight years after the events of the original, which took place in 1969, the story dives into a new chapter of Booth’s life.

While the first film saw him as the loyal sidekick to Leonardo DiCaprio’s fading actor Rick Dalton, this narrative shifts the spotlight solely to Booth, exploring his shadowy role in the underbelly of Hollywood’s golden era. DiCaprio’s return as Dalton remains uncertain, with sources suggesting a cameo at best.

Tarantino, who originally penned the script as part of his abandoned project The Movie Critic, decided against directing it himself, opting instead to pass the reins to Fincher — a rare move for the auteur known for helming his own work.

The script, which reportedly evolved from Tarantino’s exploration of Booth’s cinephile tendencies, found a home at Netflix, where Fincher has a first-look deal. Production is slated to begin in July 2025 in California, with a potential 2026 release. Netflix allegedly paid $20 million for the screenplay, with a $200 million budget for the film, signaling the streamer’s high stakes in this venture.

The collaboration marks another chapter in the long-standing partnership between Fincher and Pitt, who previously worked together on Se7en, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Pitt, who won his first acting Oscar for portraying Booth, is said to have personally brought Fincher on board after Tarantino gave his blessing.

This dream team has raised expectations, though some fans question whether Fincher’s stark, methodical style can capture the warmth and nostalgia of Tarantino’s original love letter to Hollywood.

For Netflix, securing this project is a coup in its ongoing bid to attract top-tier talent.

The streamer has already positioned itself as a haven for auteur-driven projects, with Fincher’s past works like Mank and Mindhunter paving the way.

However, the shift from a theatrical release — Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was distributed by Sony Pictures —to a streaming platform has sparked debate among cinephiles who value Tarantino’s theatrical-first ethos.

Will The Continuing Adventures of Cliff Booth redefine Hollywood storytelling for the streaming age, or will it struggle to live up to its predecessor’s legacy? With this trio at the helm, the stage is set for a cinematic event that’s as bold as Booth himself.
