Recraft V4 Is Still Available, but Recraft Has Already Moved to V4.1

Recraft V4 remains available, but it is no longer the company’s newest image-generation model. Recraft followed the February release with V4.1 in May 2026, so designers can still use V4 while evaluating a newer family for fresh projects.
The distinction matters because V4 has not been withdrawn or rendered obsolete. The current Recraft API documentation lists V4 and V4.1 side by side in the web and mobile applications and the API, while describing V4.1 as the next step beyond V4 with stronger prompt interpretation, cleaner vectors, sharper mockups and more consistent results.
What Recraft V4 actually introduced
Recraft released V4 on February 17, 2026 as a ground-up rebuild aimed at professional design rather than general image generation. The official V4 announcement presented four versions: a 1024×1024 standard raster model, a 2048×2048 Pro model, and corresponding Vector and Vector Pro options that produce editable SVG files. Recraft estimated generation times of roughly 10 seconds for standard raster output and 28 seconds for Pro.
The release centered on what Recraft calls “design taste”: decisions about composition, lighting, color relationships and visual hierarchy that go beyond literal prompt matching. That phrase should be understood as the company’s product positioning, not an objective measurement. Its launch demonstrations were selected and evaluated by Recraft, so they illustrate the intended behavior without proving universal superiority over competing models.
The more durable feature is the combination of raster and native vector generation within one model family. A designer can use the raster variants for photography-like scenes, product concepts or campaign imagery, while the vector variants target scalable illustrations, icons and graphic assets. The resulting SVG still needs normal professional review for geometry, typography, accessibility and brand compliance; “editable” does not mean automatically approved for production.
V4.1 changes the default choice, not V4’s availability
V4.1 expanded the family only about three months after V4’s launch. Recraft divides the newer generation into an expressive line focused on artistic and design quality and a Utility line intended for simpler, more predictable compositions. Standard 1-megapixel and Pro 4-megapixel versions are offered, alongside vector variants.
That makes V4.1 the logical starting point when a new brief prioritizes improved object understanding, short-prompt interpretation, photorealism or cleaner vector output. V4 remains relevant when an existing workflow already has approved prompts, reference outputs or downstream checks built around it. Switching models can alter framing, lighting and visual emphasis even when the written prompt stays unchanged, so a migration should be treated as a creative change rather than a transparent software update.
For repeatable brand work, the practical question is therefore not simply which version is newer. Teams should compare the same representative briefs in both generations, inspect text and object counts, and check whether the chosen model preserves the intended hierarchy. A visually impressive result can still fail if it changes a package shape, omits an item or turns required copy into decorative lettering.
Standard, Pro or vector: choose by the deliverable
Standard raster is the economical choice for exploring layouts and visual directions before final production. Pro raster is better suited to work that needs more native pixel detail, but the higher resolution does not eliminate the need to inspect faces, hands, labels, reflections and small objects.
The vector branches address a different requirement rather than merely supplying a sharper image. SVG output is useful when shapes must scale or remain editable, but complex generated artwork may contain more geometry than a designer wants to maintain. The decision should follow the final asset: use raster for continuous-tone imagery and vector when editable paths and scale independence are essential.
Resolution should not be confused with layout size. A 2048×2048 square may provide more detail than the standard output, yet it does not automatically satisfy a wide banner, packaging dieline or print specification. Aspect ratio, bleed, color handling and export requirements remain part of the production workflow outside the generation model.
Where V4 fits into production workflows
V4 was not confined to Recraft Studio at launch. On February 17, Vercel added V4 to AI Gateway under separate standard and Pro model identifiers, confirming that developers could call the raster variants from application workflows as well as use Recraft’s own tools.
API access makes automated generation possible, but it also raises the cost of inconsistent outputs. A sensible production pipeline records the exact model identifier, prompt, dimensions and approval state for every asset. If a team moves from V4 to V4.1, it should rerun its validation set instead of assuming that a prompt approved under the earlier model will preserve every visual choice.
For concept development, the model’s aesthetic initiative can reduce the amount of art direction required in the first prompt. For tightly specified production, however, more initiative can be a liability if the system introduces an unexpected viewpoint or atmosphere. Recraft’s newer Utility branch is particularly relevant to that tension because it separates expressive generation from the demand for calmer, more predictable output.
What remains true about the original V4 proposition
V4’s central proposition still holds: Recraft built it around the needs of designers and offered raster, high-resolution and editable-vector routes within one family. What has changed is its place in the catalogue. It is now a supported previous generation rather than the clearest default for every new assignment.
Designers with established V4 workflows do not face an urgent forced migration. Those beginning a new project should evaluate V4.1 first, then retain V4 only when its output better matches an approved visual system or when changing models would create unnecessary review work. The choice is no longer between having “design taste” and going without it; it is between two available generations with different behavior and migration costs.
