OpenAI Doubles Down on Developers: Acquires Astral and Supercharges Codex in the Battle Against Claude

OpenAI has just made its boldest infrastructure play yet.

On March 19, 2026, the company officially announced the acquisition of Astral — the elite team behind three of the most beloved and fastest-growing tools in the modern Python ecosystem: uv (the lightning-fast package manager), Ruff (the world’s fastest Python linter and formatter), and **ty** (the next-generation type checker).

This isn’t a simple talent acquisition. This is OpenAI deliberately seizing control of the daily developer workflow.

Codex Is Already Exploding — Now It’s About to Get Unstoppable

The timing couldn’t be more strategic.

Codex, OpenAI’s dedicated coding platform, is seeing explosive growth in 2026:

  • 3x growth in users
  • 5x growth in usage since January
  • - More than 2 million weekly active users

By integrating the Astral team directly into Codex, OpenAI is building something far more dangerous than just another AI chatbot: a deeply embedded AI coding environment that lives inside the tools developers already open every morning.

The Real War: Claude vs Codex

Dario Amodei (CEO of Anthropic) has said it plainly:
“The company that builds the best AI tool for programmers will win the war.”

OpenAI is now treating that statement as a battle plan.

While Anthropic has focused on powerful autonomous agents (especially after launching Channels for Telegram and Discord integration in Claude Code), OpenAI is playing a different — and perhaps smarter — game: owning the foundational developer stack itself.

uv, Ruff, and ty have quietly become infrastructure for hundreds of thousands of engineers and entire companies. Controlling them gives OpenAI the ability to make Codex feel native, instantaneous, and indispensable.

Ecosystem > Raw Model Power

The message is clear: in 2026, winning AI no longer means having the smartest standalone model. It means building the ecosystem that developers can’t live without.

OpenAI is accelerating hard. With Astral now inside the house, Codex is poised to become not just an AI assistant, but the default operating system for writing, linting, formatting, packaging, and shipping Python code.

The race between Claude and Codex has officially entered its most intense phase yet. One side is betting on agent intelligence and philosophical depth. The other is betting on owning the pipes, the tools, and the daily muscle memory of millions of developers.

And right now, OpenAI just stepped on the gas — hard.

The future of software engineering won’t be decided by who has the best model.
It will be decided by who owns the developer’s chair.

Game on.
