Today marks the exciting debut of Own, a fresh social media platform launched by veterans from Bumble and Lexit, alongside investors from Transform Ventures and Saba Capital.
Positioned as a hybrid of Instagram and TikTok, Own stands out with its focus on decentralization, blockchain technology, and financial independence for creators.
The interface will feel instantly familiar to internet users: a vertical feed featuring short videos, text posts, images, and direct messaging (DM) capabilities. However, the real innovation lies in its creator monetization model, which kicks in from day one through the $OWN token.
Creators can exchange, sell, or use these tokens for in-platform purchases, with Own claiming superior revenue splits compared to competitors.
Creators retain 80% of donation earnings (versus TikTok’s 50%), 90% from sponsored integrations, and 95% from sales in the upcoming Own Shop. All data, transactions, and content rights are recorded on the Base Layer 2 blockchain, enabling additional licensing opportunities and sales to brands.
Unlike traditional platforms, Own eliminates the need to amass a specific follower count to start earning—tokens are awarded based on audience engagement. To boost visibility, the platform incorporates a Reddit-style ranking system, where users vote on posts to elevate their prominence in the feed. The creators argue this approach reduces creators’ reliance on opaque algorithms.
