Game Over, Astrologists: Zodiac Signs Have Zero Bearing on Our State of Mind, Researchers Find

Hello!

The Stars Don’t Dictate Your Mood

If you’ve been blaming your bad attitude on your astrological birth chart, new research brings some unwelcome news.

Study Overview

Mohsen Joshanloo, an associate professor of psychology at South Korea’s Keimyung University, examined whether Western zodiac signs correlate with “subjective well-being.” His findings, published in the journal Kyklos and first reported by PsyPost, show no meaningful link between the two—challenging the idea that star signs shape emotional states.

In short, your zodiac sign is not a valid excuse for a persistently low mood.

Research Method and Scope

Joshanloo analyzed data from more than 12,000 participants in the long-running General Social Survey, a major U.S. study. He compared their self-reported zodiac signs with eight distinct measures of well-being:

  • general unhappiness
  • depressive symptoms
  • psychological distress
  • work dissatisfaction
  • financial dissatisfaction
  • perceived dullness of life
  • self-rated health
  • unhappiness with marriage

He also tested whether zodiac signs could predict future well-being. They could not.

Key Results

“An additional analysis revealed that astrological signs were no more predictive than random numbers,” Joshanloo noted in the paper. The large sample size lends weight to the conclusion that astrology offers no explanatory power here.

Why the Belief Persists

Despite the clear evidence, belief in astrology remains widespread: as many as 30 percent of Americans still think their fate is written in the stars.
