Could it have gone differently? Yes, it could have.
A recent incident in France highlights both the audacity of crypto-related crime and the unexpected twists that can follow. According to local reports, a 26-year-old TikTok crypto influencer was abducted late Friday night into Saturday morning as he returned home, just a couple of kilometers from Paris-Orly Airport.
Four unidentified assailants forced him into a stolen Renault Clio, drove him away, and beat him. His identity remains undisclosed, but he is known to have a following of 40,000 on TikTok. The kidnappers demanded a €50,000 ransom in cryptocurrency for his release.
However, the plot took an ironic turn. After inspecting the victim’s accounts and crypto wallets, the abductors discovered he had negligible funds, far short of the demanded sum. Disappointed, they let him go. The trader was granted a six-day medical leave due to his injuries, and the case has been handed over to the national police.
Authorities may have a chance to track down the perpetrators, given the unusual surge in similar incidents in France — 14 crypto-ransom kidnappings out of 50 globally in the past year.
A Pattern of Violence
This case isn’t an isolated anomaly. Take, for instance, the January abduction of David Balland, co-founder of the French crypto wallet firm Ledger, along with his wife. The kidnappers mutilated Balland’s hand, and friends paid part of a substantial ransom. Yet, within two days, France’s elite GIGN anti-terrorism unit rescued the couple, and an impressive 95% of the paid cryptocurrency — tracked via USDT transactions — was recovered.
This incident underscores a growing global trend dubbed the “thermo-rectal crypto analysis” or, more delicately in Western circles, the “$5 wrench attack” (popularized by an XKCD comic). This method involves physically coercing victims to extract passwords from highly encrypted, multi-layered crypto wallets.

A Shifting Landscape
The rise in such attacks has left major crypto holders on edge. Many now avoid carrying access codes or passwords to their primary wallets, often storing them outside the countries where they reside. This precaution reflects a broader recognition that even the most sophisticated digital security can be undone by brute force.
While the recent TikTok influencer’s release due to his lack of funds offers a rare reprieve, it also highlights the desperation and miscalculation driving these crimes.
As France grapples with this wave of abductions, the question remains: will law enforcement adapt quickly enough to protect an increasingly targeted crypto community? As of June 30, 2025, the answer is still unfolding.
