Starting early 2026, European Union countries will introduce a new app for digital age verification, integrating it into the region’s digital identity framework. This move aims to enhance online safety and compliance with age-restricted services across the bloc.
A key requirement for age verification will be remote authentication via the Google Play Integrity API. This mandates that the app be downloaded exclusively from the Google Play Store. Additionally, the device must pass Google’s security checks, and its operating system must be an officially licensed version of Android. As a result, users with devices running alternative Android versions — such as custom ROMs or unofficial builds — will be unable to use the app.

The initiative reflects the EU’s push toward secure digital identity solutions, though it may exclude some users due to these stringent requirements. The app’s rollout is expected to streamline age verification for services like online gaming, social media, and e-commerce, while sparking debates about accessibility and device compatibility.
