Cybertruck Gets FSD, Tries to Drive Onto Median in the Middle of Sunset Boulevard

Hello!

Tesla Begins Rolling Out Controversial “Full Self-Driving” Software to Cybertruck

Tesla has begun delivering its long-debated—and widely criticized—“Full Self-Driving” (FSD) software to the Cybertruck. A limited group of testers received the update via over-the-air delivery in 2026, activating a supervised version of the driver-assistance system on the 6,600-pound electric pickup.

The Sunset Boulevard Close Call

The supervised FSD package lets the vehicle handle most driving tasks, including navigation through city streets and complex intersections. However, real-world performance remains far from flawless. X (formerly Twitter) account Whole Mars Catalog documented one such moment when a Cybertruck attempted a left turn onto Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles and veered toward the median. The driver had to intervene quickly to avoid the barrier.

“Not so beautiful after all,” the driver remarked after correcting course. “So it was gonna drive onto the median.”

Safety Concerns and Regulatory Scrutiny

The incident underscores the risks of testing unfinished “Early Access” software on public roads. Tesla’s Autopilot and FSD systems have already been linked to hundreds of crashes. Regulators have warned that the technology can create a false sense of security, encouraging drivers to become overly reliant on it.

In 2026, an independent AMCI Testing team drove a Tesla in FSD mode for more than 1,000 miles and recorded over 75 interventions—roughly one every 13 miles.

“What’s most disconcerting and unpredictable is that you may watch FSD successfully negotiate a specific scenario many times—often on the same stretch of road or intersection—only to have it inexplicably fail the next time,” said AMCI director Guy Mangiamele.

Mixed Impressions from Early Testers

Despite the dramatic moment on Sunset Boulevard, the rest of the test drive was relatively uneventful. The driver noted several interventions that would not have been necessary in a Model 3, yet praised one left turn onto a one-way street as “handled beautifully.”

“I have to say overall I’m impressed, I expected it to be a lot worse,” the tester concluded. “I wouldn’t hesitate to take this over the Model 3 on a long drive.”

Overall verdict: “Not perfect, almost drove onto the median on Sunset Boulevard.”

What’s Next for Cybertruck Owners?

It remains unclear when the wider fleet of Cybertrucks will receive the $8,000 FSD option. Tesla is preparing to release Version 13, which the company claims will significantly reduce the number of required interventions. Given the automaker’s history of optimistic timelines, many owners may still face a lengthy wait.
