Cloud Encryption Tips for Businesses: Infographic

Hello!

Even though Internet security continues to evolve rapidly, data has never been more vulnerable. Businesses now manage unprecedented volumes of information, while cybercriminals possess increasingly sophisticated tools. As a result, data encryption has become an essential practice—particularly for organisations that store data in the cloud.

Cloud Encryption Adoption in 2026

According to 2026 research from the Ponemon Institute, three out of four businesses have already deployed cloud encryption either partially or fully, with 43% implementing a company-wide encryption strategy across all levels of their operations.

The Cost of Inaction

It is hardly surprising that companies are prioritising cloud encryption. The average data breach now costs organisations approximately $4 million (Source: IBM). This figure underscores why proactive security measures are no longer optional but a core component of responsible business operations.

Understanding the Three Main Encryption Strategies

Cloud encryption strategies generally fall into three categories: client-side, in-transit, and at-rest. Each offers different levels of protection depending on your data sensitivity and volume.

  • Client-side encryption is the most secure option and is strongly recommended for sensitive information. Data is encrypted on the user’s device before it ever reaches the cloud, ensuring that providers cannot access readable information.
  • In-transit encryption protects data while it travels between your device and the cloud server, safeguarding it during transmission.
  • At-rest encryption keeps data encrypted while stored on the cloud provider’s servers.

The latter two approaches may be sufficient for businesses handling smaller volumes of non-sensitive data. However, organisations dealing with confidential or regulated information should default to client-side encryption for maximum protection.

Best Practices for a Robust Encryption Plan

Regardless of the strategy chosen, cloud encryption delivers valuable data security and peace of mind. Nevertheless, experts still advise maintaining physical backups of all critical cloud-based data, as no cloud environment is entirely immune to sophisticated attacks. It is also wise to develop a comprehensive encryption roadmap that prioritises your most sensitive assets.
