Bill Gates has unveiled the Alzheimer’s Insights AI Prize, a groundbreaking $1 million competition aimed at harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) to transform Alzheimer’s disease research.
The initiative seeks to uncover new drug targets, biomarkers, or patterns in the progression of Alzheimer’s that have eluded traditional analysis methods. By leveraging AI’s potential to analyze vast datasets, the prize aims to accelerate breakthroughs in understanding and treating one of the world’s most challenging neurodegenerative diseases.
The competition, launched through Gates Ventures and the Alzheimer’s Disease Data Initiative, invites global participants—including academic laboratories, startups, and tech companies — to develop innovative AI algorithms and models. The focus is on identifying insights that could lead to faster clinical advancements, addressing the complexity of Alzheimer’s, which involves multiple biological pathways and has seen limited progress despite over a century of research. The winning solution must demonstrate clear potential to speed up clinical discoveries, a key criterion set by a judging panel composed of neurobiologists and machine learning experts.
Applications for the prize are open and will be accepted until the end of 2025, with the winner announced in 2026. This timeline allows participants ample opportunity to refine their approaches, drawing on the initiative’s resources and the AD Workbench, a cloud-based platform for data sharing and analysis. The prize reflects Gates’ personal commitment to combating Alzheimer’s, a cause deeply tied to his family experiences, and his belief in AI as a “force multiplier” for medical research.
