Apple to Open Apple Intelligence to Google and Anthropic Models in iOS 27

Apple Inc. is preparing a major expansion of its Apple Intelligence platform, allowing users to select third-party AI models from rivals like Google and Anthropic to power core system features. The change, expected this fall with the release of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27, marks a significant shift from the current setup, where OpenAI’s ChatGPT serves as the primary external option.
User Choice and System Integration

The new capability is built around a framework called Extensions. Third-party developers must add support for this system in their App Store applications.
Once enabled, the corresponding AI model becomes available for integration with built-in Apple features. Users will likely be directed to a dedicated section in the App Store to discover and add compatible AI services.
Testing and Partnerships Underway
Apple is already conducting closed-door testing with models from Google (including Gemini) and Anthropic (Claude). The company has reportedly signed agreements that position these providers as viable alternatives.

While Apple’s own on-device models will continue to handle privacy-focused, lightweight tasks, users will gain the option to route more complex requests to their chosen external provider.

Strategic Implications

The expansion comes as adoption of the initial Apple Intelligence features has been mixed, with some users finding the ChatGPT integration useful but others desiring more options. Allowing Gemini, Claude, and potentially other models could increase engagement with the platform.
Apple has not issued an official comment on the reports, which stem primarily from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The features are expected to be previewed at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) this summer, with public releases following in the fall of 2026.
This development could reshape the competitive landscape in consumer AI, giving users unprecedented choice on one of the world’s most popular device platforms while pressuring AI companies to optimize their apps for seamless Apple integration.
