For large-scale projects, common alternatives include ground-mounted installations or solar carports. A newer option is floating solar power plants, which are mounted on bodies of water such as hydroelectric reservoirs. These systems connect to existing hydropower infrastructure and can generate energy even during nighttime hours when paired with hydro resources.
New Battery Chemistries

Emerging battery chemistries, including zinc-air and lithium-sulfur, offer compelling alternatives. Zinc-air batteries deliver lower-cost energy with extended service life and a reduced risk of overheating or fire, eliminating the need for expensive cooling systems. Zinc is also non-toxic, unlike lithium, whose extraction and processing carry significant environmental and health risks.
Researchers are simultaneously advancing lithium-sulfur batteries, which promise up to five days of smartphone autonomy and theoretical electric-vehicle ranges of 1000 km. These batteries also boast a lower environmental footprint and reduced manufacturing costs compared with conventional Li-ion cells.
Green Cement

Green cement provides a lower-impact alternative. It performs comparably or better than traditional cement, requires fewer natural resources, and can be produced at lower temperatures, resulting in significantly reduced CO₂ emissions.
Household Energy Efficiency
Reducing overall energy consumption remains one of the most effective strategies for addressing climate change. Improving home energy efficiency offers a practical starting point, with a growing range of smart, energy-saving products now available that can also lower annual household utility bills.
