ChatGPT or Claude? The $20 Choice Now Splits on Coding and Cost

Choose Claude Pro when repository coding and patch quality are the priority; choose ChatGPT Plus when terminal-agent work, research tools and broader model access matter more. Both subscriptions occupy the $20 tier, but the available evidence does not support one universal winner.
Cost produces a separate decision. Consumer subscriptions determine access inside the apps, while API workloads are billed by tokens under different rate cards. GPT-5.6 Sol currently has the lower uncached API price, even though Claude Fable 5 has the stronger result on the directly comparable coding benchmark.
What the two $20 subscriptions buy
Anthropic’s individual-plan comparison prices Claude Pro at $20 per month or $200 per year. It describes Pro capacity as standard, while Max 5x costs $100 monthly and Max 20x costs $200, providing five and twenty times Pro capacity per session respectively. The comparison makes clear that the entry subscription is not an unlimited agent plan.
ChatGPT Plus includes GPT-5.6 Sol with Medium and High reasoning, but excludes Extra High and Sol Pro. OpenAI’s availability and limits table lists Sol, Terra and Luna for Plus in Work and Codex; it also notes that Sol is rolling out gradually and that reaching a reasoning limit may trigger another available reasoning model.
The equal sticker price therefore does not establish equal capacity. Neither provider promises a fixed number of completed patches, research jobs or agent runs in the plan information used here. Buyers expecting sustained autonomous work should treat model access and usable session capacity as separate criteria.
Coding quality favors Claude within the published evidence

The BenchLM dataset verified on August 27, 2026 gives Claude Fable 5 an overall public score of 83.01, compared with 82.04 for GPT-5.6 Sol. Fable scores 95 on SWE-bench Verified and leads the shared SWE-bench Pro result by 80 to 64.6; Sol leads Terminal-Bench 2 by 91.9 to 84.3. BenchLM labels Sol’s public ranking Estimated, so the composite-score gap should not be treated as decisive.
For work dominated by repository comprehension, issue resolution and patch creation, Claude Pro is the better evidence-based starting point. The recommendation is deliberately narrow: SWE-bench measures defined software-engineering tasks, not every language, repository or model setting available through the subscription.
Benchmark leadership also does not make generated changes merge-ready. Tests, diff review and security checks remain part of the engineering process, while usage capacity can become the practical constraint during long sessions.
Terminal agents reverse the result

GPT-5.6 Sol’s Terminal-Bench 2 lead points to ChatGPT Plus when the central job is multi-step command-line execution. Sol is available to Plus users in Codex, aligning the measured model result with a terminal-oriented product surface included in the plan.
This does not conflict with Claude’s SWE-bench Pro advantage. Producing a correct repository change and navigating a terminal environment overlap, but they test different failure modes. Shell investigation, tool invocation and test orchestration can favor a different model from patch generation.
The benchmark still cannot predict how many successful runs a subscription will permit before a limit or fallback intervenes. For frequent agent use, the relevant practical measure is successful completion across representative tasks, not the highest score in an unrelated coding category.
API economics favor GPT-5.6 Sol

The official GPT-5.6 Sol model card lists promotional rates of $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens, available at least through November 21, 2026. Requests exceeding 272,000 input tokens are charged at twice the input rate and 1.5 times the output rate for the full request.
Anthropic’s Fable 5 pricing is $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens, with a 90% input-token discount for prompt-cache hits. For a hypothetical uncached workload containing one million input and one million output tokens, those confirmed rates produce totals of $24 for Sol and $60 for Fable.
That arithmetic does not prove that Sol delivers the lower total cost for every application. A more capable model may require fewer retries or shorter prompts, while effective caching can materially change Fable’s bill. But when both models clear the required quality threshold and the workload remains within the standard pricing conditions, Sol is the cheaper uncached option.
Research and writing require softer judgments
ChatGPT Plus is the stronger default for research workflows that combine investigation, synthesis and tool use. The plan exposes Sol across ChatGPT Work and Codex, giving one subscription multiple surfaces for moving from gathered material to analysis or code. This is a product-access recommendation, not proof that every Sol answer will be better researched.
Claude Pro has the more persuasive case for writing and editing when human preference and structured long-form work matter. The published comparison gives Fable the higher human-preference signal, but such aggregated preferences cannot determine whether it will match a particular publication, audience or house style.
For mixed research-and-writing work, the choice is therefore between workflow breadth and preference evidence. Citations, quotations and consequential factual claims still require verification regardless of which assistant produces the draft.
The workload-specific verdict
- Repository coding and patch creation: Claude Pro has the stronger directly comparable SWE-bench Pro result.
- Terminal agents and Codex: ChatGPT Plus pairs Sol’s Terminal-Bench 2 lead with access to the model in Codex.
- Research workflows: ChatGPT Plus is the broader default because Sol is available across Work and Codex.
- Writing and editing: Claude Pro has the better published human-preference signal, although suitability remains audience-specific.
- Metered API workloads: GPT-5.6 Sol has the lower current uncached rate under standard request sizes.
ChatGPT Plus is the more versatile $20 choice for mixed tool use, terminal work and research. Claude Pro is the better-supported choice for code-focused work and a reasonable preference for writing. API economics should remain a separate calculation because subscription access, benchmark performance and token billing answer different questions.
