Polycam Review: Phone LiDAR to Floor Plan
#Quasa #QUA #polycam
Polycam (poly.cam) turns a phone into a capture kit: LiDAR rooms, photo meshes, Gaussian splats, drone models, and shareable objects. Free is a try-on with capped AI captures and GLTF. Basic is $150 a year ($12.50/month billed yearly, or $30 monthly) for unlimited objects, spaces, splats, AI captures, six mesh formats, and private links. Business is $400 a year per user and is the plan that actually matters for AEC: 2D/3D floor plans, advanced measure, team library, point clouds, walkthroughs. The old Pro SKU is gone; legacy Pro keeps features if you stay billed. Floor-plan work wants an iPhone Pro or iPad Pro with LiDAR. Accuracy is “about half an inch” on a careful interior pass, not a survey gun. They claim half the Fortune 500. Enterprise is SSO, regional storage, and a CSM. It is not Matterport-with-a-tripod, and it is not CJIS evidence.
𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐓𝐇𝐒:
• Phone and drone capture without a dedicated camera
• LiDAR, photogrammetry, and Gaussian splats in one account
• Unlimited floor plans on Business at a flat seat price
• Fast share links and a web viewer
• Team library and roles for jobsites
𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐋 𝐅𝐎𝐑:
Architects, GC supers, product designers, and location scouts who already carry a Pro phone and need a twin before they leave the site.
𝐇𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓𝐒:
• 7-day Business trial
• Six-plus export formats on paid seats
• Space, object, 360, and AI capture modes
• No per-plan Matterport-style add-on for floor plans
• Trusted by large enterprises, per the site
𝐏𝐎𝐓𝐄𝐍𝐓𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒:
• Floor plans live on Business, not Basic
• LiDAR quality is device-bound
• App Store and web prices can diverge
• Not a replacement for a calibrated scanner
• Weak fit for chain-of-custody forensics
𝐎𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐃𝐈𝐂𝐓: 4.4/5 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐑𝐒
Scan Free. Pay Basic if you only export objects. Buy Business if you ship measured plans. Keep a total station for bid-critical dimensions.
